[General description] The styling of the new Crapp & Hawkes' building is plain and solid, two stories tall with a wide cantilever verandah. There are large plate glass windows on the ground floor and mullion windows on the upper floor. The building is recently completed as there is a pile of builder's rubble in the street and a cart next to it. [General description] H.C. Richards' modern four storey building with its ground floor showroom is viewed from the opposite side of the street. Cars on display can be glimpsed through the plate-glass windows. This showroom was described in 1922 as a 'magnificent motor emporium'. H.C. Richards was one of the earliest importers and dealers of motor vehicles in Adelaide. [General description] This two storey stone building has been gutted by a fire which occurred at about 3 a.m. on Monday, 2nd January 1928. Damage was estimated to be more than £20.000. The building was occupied chiefly by WIlcox, Mofflin. Ltd., hide, skin and wool merchants, and S. C. Eyles and Co., wholesale grocers and Importers. The Richards Building next door was also badly damaged in a big fire three years earlier on Tuesday 11th November, 1924. [On back of photograph] 'The two storey buildings were demolished in 1928. [General description] This interesting building, with its decorative parapet mouldings and large arched doorway, has been a dance studio for Mrs. W.A. Wood, as her name features on the fan-shaped window over the entrance. It has also been the premises of Frank Woodcock, Matthews and Co. Fertilisers and Remington College. [General description] Men and their trusty horses are hard at work as the site for the new National Mutual Building is being prepared. Wooden props are being used to support the walls of the building next door. (See B 5300 for the completed building.) The Stock Exchange buildings and the Napoleon Hotel, with a banner advertising 'East Adelaide Ales', can be seen on the opposite side of the street. [General description] Nine storey building of the T & G Mutual Life Society located on the corner of Grenfell Street and King William Street. The building has a hanging verandah from the first floor shading the footpath. Balustrades and small columns adorn the top floor of the building. Cars and bicycles can be seen near the building. [General description] A lively street scene with city buildings, horse transport and a crowd of men and boys which has assembled outside the Register Building. The photograph has been taken from the opposite side of the road and includes in the foreground onlookers who are sitting and standing at the kerb. In the centre a man is pushing a large hand barrow. To the left of the Register Building is H.Hampton's Advertising Agency, then C.G. Gurr's Auctioneers. Next along is Cowra Chambers with its classical columns. [General description] The splendid new T & G (Temperance and General) Building, Chicago School in style, has eleven floors and was Adelaide's tallest building for some years. The four wheeled wagonettes seen here were frequently used as cabs at the time. The premises of J.M. Snoswell, saddlers can be seen on the right. Napoleon Lane is a private right of way providing access to the rear of the building. The taxi in the foreground bears a logo which is probably that of the St George's cab company. [General description] The Brookman Building was designed by Alfred Wells, and built for Sir George Brookman. It was completed in 1896. On the right is the new Register building, built in 1908-8 under architects Garlick and Jackman. Photograph of James Shaw's oil painting of Grenfell Street, south side, with St Andrew's Presbyterian Church behind its picket fence, from a painting in a private collection. The foundation stone of the church was laid in February 1844 and opened in July that year. It was demolished in 1893. It had a seating capacity of 250, with a bell of Burra copper hung in 1845. Notes on the back of the photograph state "Grenfell Street, south side. Acres 141 and 142. Church of Scotland (St Andrew's) about 1852. Church completed in 1844. Wesleyan Church, Pirie Street (shown in the view) completed in 1851".

[General description] The Grenfell Buildings were erected in 1900 and this corner section was first the office for the Castle Salt Co-operative Company. In 1927 it is now the premises of the Commercial Bank. A flatbed truck turns the corner in front of the building and a pedestrian crosses the road in the foreground. [General description] The newly completed Bible House, built as the headquarters for the British and Foreign Bible Society, was designed by architect Alfred Wells and is a fine example of the secular Gothic Revival style. It is built from red brick and features a corner oriel window with stained glass. It was sold in 1962 to A. Bertram Cox for use as an accountant's office and the name of the building was changed to Bertram House.
