[General description] Doctor Wyatt's house on the eastern side of Wyatt Street. The brick house has a return verandah and is set in a verdant garden. [On back of photograph] Acre 146 Wyatt Street, east side 1877-79 Dr Wyatt's house. Looking north west towards Wyatt Street. For site see Cadastral survey plan, 1880. South side of cottage is 51 yards south of Grenfell Street. East side is 10 yards east of Wyatt Street. Reproduced in 1926 from a photo. in the possession of Mrs. G.N. Birks, Millswood. [General description] This two storey stone building has cement dressings and a decorative parapet. it is currently the premises for Midlanes' Furnishing Specialists and Auction Mart where a sign in front of the building indicates that there is to be a 'Great clearing furniture sale' before closing due to renovations. [General description] Stone building on Wyatt Street, with the name of mercantile house W & T Rhodes Ltd. displayed prominently. This was their tinware manufactory making domestic and dairy tinware. This company, established in a small way in the 1850s had many different interests by 1909 including packing case manufacturing, retail hardware and furnishing stores. (Information from Adelaide's 'Advertiser' of Wednesday 24 March 1909). Grenfell Street, south side, June 24th 1924. Galligans is on the west corner of Hyde Street. Taylors stands on the N.W. corner of Acre 147. Galigans was demolished in 1926. For the photograph of the building subsequently erected on this site see B 4862. Jonathon Galligan was an upholsterer and mattress manufacturer. J.N. Taylor was a Manchester warehouseman, cycle and motor cycle importers. Next door to Taylors was the Co-operative Printing and Publishing Company which housed the printing office of The Daily Herald.

[General description] The main tenant in this recently enlarged building is Harrison San Miguel Pty. Ltd. The two extra stories blend well with the original building, the facade of which has been rendered to match the new section. [General description] The premises of J.N. Taylor and Company have been enlarged, matching the new corner building with the existing one. Universal Pictures occupy a section of the building. The round sign on the left reads 'Vehicles must not stand on this side of the street'. [General description] Roads and tramways wind around Hindmarsh Square, with a network of electric wires overhead. Beyond the trees of the Square city buildings can be seen, including some smoking chimneys. On the centre right are the premises of W. Darby, monumental masons. [General description] The South Australia Brush Company (SABCO) was founded by William Ellis Hay in 1893, so this two storey building, situated on the corner of Grenfell and Hyde Streets is one of the earliest business premises for the company. [General description] The Y.W.C.A. Building was constructed in 1900 of red bricks in the Federation style. An impressive entrance with tall pillars either side supporting a balcony and a corner turret are features of the building, designed by architects G. de Lacy Evans and R J Haddon of Melbourne. [General description] The Congregational Church, with its twin towers silhouetted against a cloudy sky, is partially obscured by shrubbery. In the left foreground is a group of 'ghostly' children who had probably moved when the photograph was taken. Designed by George Abbott this church was opened in 1862. Taylor's Motorcycle shop, agents for B.S.A. and Indian Motorcycles, has been built into the side of what was once a fine church building, still with damaged stained glass in its windows. (See B 71558 for the Congregational Church). On the left is Knuckey's tyre shop. Motorcycles and a truck are parked at the kerb. [General description] Three businesses adjoin in this photograph. On the left is part of the premises of Campbell and Worthington, dealers in cars including De Dion, Bouton and Leyland. In the centre at number 219 is D. O'Brien, 'Titan' Battery Service Station, and A.B. Jobson Electrical. The building on the right is the premises of 'Syno' Signwriters. [General description] Tam O'Shanter Lane is a narrow back street lane with light industrial buildings. This new cement faced building in the centre is Art Deco in style. Its neighbour is a corrugated iron structure. [General description] Freeman Motors dominates this view of east end of Grenfell Street, occupying the two centre buildings. They specialised in Holden and Bedford vehicles. Mostly Holden cars are parked out front. Next door (right) is Harvey's, suppliers of milking machines and other agricultural implements. [General description] Taken from the opposite side of East Terrace, this view shows the Adelaide Electric Supply Company building and its two chimneys. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 155 & 156 / East Terrace, between Pirie & Grenfell Sts. / June 15, 1926 / The chimneys of the Adelaide Electric Supply Co. are parallel with Grenfell St. and are 45 yards south of it. They are respectively 24 and 45 yards west of East Terrace. Chimney specifications: (a) 8 feet internal diameter, 150 feet high, about 250,000 bricks (b) 10 feet internal diameter, 160 feet high, about 330,000 bricks.' [General description] The Grenfell Street Power Station was opened by the Lady Mayoress on 19 November 1901, with a large number of Adelaide's leading citizens gathered to see the lights go on. This saw the beginning of the gradual roll-out of electricity supply to the whole of Adelaide. The power station was shut down in 1925 when Osborne power station took over all operations. See B 10366 for a photograph taken in 1923 showing extensions to the building which were made in 1912. The hotel on the right is the 'Producers', briefly known as the 'Electric Light' between 1900and 1906). [General description] This view of city street and buildings is dominated by the cooling towers of the Adelaide Electric Supply Company which was founded in 1904. [General description] This photograph illustrates the passing of the horse drawn era: a livery stable is converted to a motor business. The Republic Motor Truck Company was a famous manufacturer of commercial trucks circa 1913 - 1929, in Alma, Michigan. Their trucks were used extensively by the Americans in World War One. Other motor related business premises can be seen in the centre of the view and the Y.W.C.A. building is toward the right. The two storey shop is situated at number 128 Pirie Street and it sells Harley Davidson motor cycles and Bates and Goodyear tyres. [On back of photograph] Acre 164. Pirie Street, north side.
