[General description] Two Impressive Adelaide buildings from the nineteen twenties. On the right, the facade of the classically styled six storey Executor Trustee and Agency Building is dominated by paired Roman columns. Joint architects were Walter H. Bagot ,Laybourne Smith and C.E.W. Parsons. The Alliance Assurance Company Building architects were J.A. Kethel, Rutt and Lawson. Styling is also classical and the facade features a more modest pair of columns. Captain Sturt's Expedition, south corner of Currie and King William Streets departure on August 10th, 1844. From an original water colour drawing in the National Gallery. A comparison with B7861 which purports to be a sketch of the same occasion shows certain differences in the buildings on Acres 78 and 108. On the extreme right is shown a boat taken on the expedition. The drawing is the scene looking north east from the south corner of Currie and King William Street towards the northern corner of Grenfell and King William Streets.

It is situated on the NE corner of King William and Grenfell Streets. Advertisements for Orlando wines and West End beer are prominently displayed. The hotel, built in 1866 is soon to be demolished and replaced by the National Mutual Building (1961). The car in the centre is a Holden 1950s FE or FC. [General description] The Imperial Hotel, built in 1866 for Asher Hamm with Michael McMullen being the architect. Situated on the NE corner of King William and Grenfell Streets it is soon to be demolished (1960), the last licensee being T.J. Leahy. The hotel was replaced by the National Mutual Building, 1961. [On back of photograph] 'Bank of Australasia, north corner of Currie Street and King William Streets. / Acre 109 / Before 1879 (absence of tramlines). Probably taken in the eighteen sixties or seventies.' [General description] Passersby pose for the photographer in front of the bank building which dominates the view. It dates from before 1860 and is a plain building in classical style featuring four pilasters. It is surrounded by a wrought iron fence, and young street trees have been planted. A gas light is on the corner. On the right is Green's Exchange. See B 2911 for the new bank built in 1886. [Duplicate of B 4678.]

[General description] Horse drawn vehicles, some for hire, are lined up in the centre of the street. The large building in the centre of the view is the Bank of Australasia, and on its right is Green's Exchange, with the verandah and balcony. The premises of R.H. Wigg are to the right of Green's. Perryman's Jewellers are seen on the opposite side of the road. In the centre left of the view, the Albert Tower section of the Town Hall can be seen, under construction. Gouge's fountain, soon to be removed for the 1867 visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, is seen in the centre of the street.

This two storey buildiing with its criss-crossed timber verandah railings was known as Green's Exchange, and was a land and general auction mart. [General description] Two men pose in front of the Bank of South Australia building, one of them leaning on a hitching post at the kerb. This building, commissioned by the Bank of South Australia in 1875, was designed by Edmund W. Wright in the French Renaissance style and completed by 1878. In 1972 there was a public campaign to save it from demolition and the State Government bought the building. After extensive renovations it was re-named Edmund Wright House. [General description] This building was designed by Edmund W. Wright and built 1875-78 for the Bank of South Australia. It is considered exceptional among Adelaide's early buildings with its intricate stone carving by Scottish sculptor William Maxwell and British artist and sculptor Joseph Durham. In 1971, after a spirited public campaign it was bought by the State Government to prevent it from being demolished by developers. Adjacent to Johnson's premises is the Alex Cowan & Sons building, which was first listed in the Sands and McDougall directory in 1885 as Cowan & Co. Papermakers and Wholesale Stationers, Grenfell Street. By 1900 they were listed as Alex Cowan & Sons Ltd., Leigh Street. [General description] Two cars are parked in front of this new building which is finished with cement render and has large plate glass windows. This well-known Adelaide firm, which manufactured agricultural implements, was started by John Bagshaw in 1939. He built Ridley's stripper and designed Australia's frst winnowing machine, sold under the trademark 'Champion'. In 1924 J.H. Horwood joined the firm.
