[General description] This two storey hotel is built in the neo classical style and has a rendered facade and decorative mouldings around its arched windows. It has a moulded crown and anchor insignia displayed on the parapet above its corner entrance. It stands on the site of the original Union Inn Arms Hotel (1847-1851), its first licensee being James Ellery (7-4-1853). [General description] The well known and respected Richard Spencer Carriage and Waggon Manufacturing Company, established in 1866 by Richard Spencer, a native of Lancashire who arrived in South Australia in the 'Adamant' in 1863. Two horse drawn vehicles stand in front of these premises which are an extensive complex of stone and corrugated iron buildings. The motorbike in the foreground heralds the motor transport of the future. [General description] A view north along Bent Street to Rundle Street. On the left is the new premises of Clarksons Limited Glass Merchants. Clarksons is Adelaide's oldest glass business, opened by Heinrich Vosz in the 1850s in Rundle Street, Adelaide. He was South Australia's first importer of plate glass. The name of the business was changed to Clarkson Ltd in 1915. Many of Adelaide's churches have windows designed and made by the firm. [General description] A hotel has existed on this site since 1856. It has been altered and renamed over the years but at the time this photograph was taken it is known as the General Gordon under Licensee C.A. Darwent. It is a two storey building with a corrugated iron roof and wide verandahs, decorated with iron lace. It still exists (2012) under the name of the Griffin's Head. [General description] There has been a hotel on this site since 1856, under several different names. The publican at the time this view was taken is C.A. Darwent. The hotel, a two storey stone building with wide verandahs and decorative iron lace on its balcony is soon to be remodelled and re-named the Hotel Grenfell. The neighbour is Burmeister's Big House printing firm. [General description] Holden and Frost saddlery, forerunner to the motor company General Motors Holden's Australian operation. The ornate facade of the building features a statue of a white horse standing on a balcony over the entrance. A horse stands in front of the premises harnessed to a wagon partially loaded with hides. James Alexander Holden set up his saddlery business in 1856 in King William Street, later moving to this Grenfell Street building. This small business was to become the forerunner of G.M.H. in Australia.
