Summary

[General description] The well known and respected Richard Spencer Carriage and Waggon Manufacturing Company, established in 1866 by Richard Spencer, a native of Lancashire who arrived in South Australia in the 'Adamant' in 1863. Two horse drawn vehicles stand in front of these premises which are an extensive complex of stone and corrugated iron buildings. The motorbike in the foreground heralds the motor transport of the future. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 97 / Union Street, west side / October 3rd 1928 / For alterations made in 1939 see B 8201 / Left side of cottage is 42.5 yards north of Grenfell Street / Frontage of cottage is 12 yards / Far side of the Spencer Co.'s premises is 71 1/2 yards north of Grenfell Street'.
