Rundle Street, Adelaide, south side, on Sunday, December 17th 1922. The Bijou Hotel and Wedler's (next door east) were demolished in 1923. The Bijou Hotel stands on the north west corner of Acre 86. [General description] This view shows city buildings around the intersection of Rundle and Pulteney Streets, where traffic is being directed by a policeman on point duty. The car in the centre, registration number 18440, is a Buick 27.3 h.p. Tourer registered to C.H. Ockenden of Mannum. [General description] The premises of Fitch's department store are situated on the south west corner of the Rundle Street and Pulteney Street intersection. The store, which has recently undergone alterations, is busy with shoppers attending its "Great Sale". Horse drawn vehicles are seen on the streets and a policeman stands at point duty. [General description] This is the G.R. Wills and Company Clothing factory, built of red brick, which was opened in 1910. It was considered at the time to be a 'model establishment' in its care of its 400 workers, about two thirds of whom were women. The premises are to let. [General description] This red brick two storey shop at 145 Rundle Street is the premises of the London and Manchester warehouse of J.T. Fitch, Draper. There is a large array of wares displayed in the shop windows. A policeman and other people, possibly store proprietors and staff stand in front of the shop. [General description] The remodelled premises of softgoods merchant R.S. Tanner are dwarfed by the Foy & Gibson building behind. The building, which has an Art Deco facade is named 'Spinner house' presumably after F.S. Walton, cotton spinners and manufacturers whose firm occupies part of the building. Cars are parked in Hindmarsh Square. [General Description] Hotel Austral on the corner of Rundle Street and Bent Street. Other shops between the Hotel and Foy and Gibson's Department Store include F. Moller Cycle and Motor Depot and W. Storrie and Company Limited Importers. Men, women and a child are walking along the footpath and a car is parked outside the Motor Depot. [On back of photograph] Acres 89 & 88. [General description] Southern side of Rundle Street on the corner of Bent Street. Premises comprise of J. Flavel and Company who hire tents, fancy goods and household ironmongery. [General description] Shops on the southern side of Rundle Street between Bent Street and Ebenezer Place. They include J. Foglia maker of bird cages, George Craig Red Bird Cycle Depot, C. Butler Boot Makers, New York Tailors and Sym Choon Fruiterers. The shops have verandahs with ornate verandah posts and most have balconies on the upper storeys. On the corner of Union Street is Solomon Rosengarten Pawnbrokers, Charles Bicknell Saddler. A horse and cart and a bicycle are stationary and women are walking under the shady verandahs. [General description] This new four storey brick building is next door to a large iron structure, once Parry's Feed Merchants and livery stables, probably now used for the motor trade. There is a Shell bowser at its doorway. It has a stone facade, arched upper floor windows and decorative brick quoins and dressings. Its balcony is trimmed with iron lace. [General description] A group of men, probably staff and hotel patrons, are standing in front of the Stag Inn which has been partially demolished. See B 539 for the completed renovations of the hotel. The publican at this time is Thomas Richardson. The hotel stables are on the left of the view and in front of them, men are at work on the site. In the background smoke can be seen billowing from the chimney of the Adelaide Electric Supply Company.
