[General description] This painting shows the Norfolk Arms Inn (at the time of Licensee George James) with a few locals grouped on the verandah. Spain the Grocer occupies part of the ground floor. In the foreground a lady and gentleman canter past on spirited horses accompanied by their dog whilst a few Aboriginal people look on. On the extreme left, Birks Chemists has recently added extra stories, as has C.J.Young's Shoe store (with the rounded facade). Allans Music store (in the centre) is the next to expand its premises. People walk on the footpath and a horse and cart pass by. [General description] Three Rundle Street buildings, all recently enlarged and upgraded, reflecting the confidence of the times. On the right is the Allan's and on the left is the Birks building. In the centre is the Young's Shoes building which was designed by architects J.A. Kethel, Rutt and Lawson in the style of Dutch Expressionism with its glazed dark brown brickwork, rounded façade and gabled roof line. Pedestrians stroll along the footpath past shopfronts and cars are parked at the kerb. [General description] Two gentlemen are standing in front of the Hamburg Hotel. The building features decorative wooden verandah brackets and iron lace, and a large mirror by the front door advertises Wolfe's Schnapps. The licensee at this time was Jno. H. Flannagan. The hotel started out as the Suffolk Inn in 1840, but was known as the Hamburg since 1847. From 1915-1966, when it was de-licenced, it was named the Oriental. See B 1203 for a view of the hotel, virtually unchanged in 1923, and one taken in 1964, (B 15320), showing many alterations. [General description] Looking north along Gawler Place towards the rear of the Oriental Hotel, which is situated on Rundle Street. Shops on the right are soon to be demolished and replaced by a new building named Claridge House. [General description] A corner perspective of the Oriental Hotel, taken from across Rundle Street. It is a five storey building, three of which have verandahs and balconies. The corners of the balconies have been curved in keeping with the art deco influence at the time. A hotel has been on this site since 26th March, 1840 when it was known as the Suffolk Inn. In 1847 it became the Hamburg when the licensee was W. Pohlmann. In 1915 the name was changed to the Oriental, perhaps in response to the war. [General description] Looking down on the business in Linde's Lane on a rainy day. W. McNaughton, Love and Company is on the eastern side of the Lane next to Sargood Brothers from Melbourne. [General description] Premises on the corner of Rundle Street and Lindes Lane. A horse and cart are parked outside The Crown Studio Photographers at number ninety one Rundle Street. The goods on the cart have been covered by a tarpulin on this wet day. A young man is sheltering under the verandah from the rain. Next door on the eastern side of the photographers is S. Mayfield and Sons Cabinet Makers. A horse and cart are parked in Lindes Lane which is cobbled with the rain flowing down a central drain. [On back of photograph] Acre 83.
