[General description] In this interior view of White's rooms wooden chairs are arranged in rows in the foreground. The stage, complete with a piano, is seen in the distance. Two large gasoliers hang over the auditorium. (From September 1859 the building was lit by gas. It must have had its own gas plant as reticulated gas was not available in Adelaide until June, 1863.) Opened in June 1856 by George White the rooms were used for concerts, theatricals, balls and public meetings. [General description] A buggy drawn by a pair of grey horses is standing in the foreground of this view of the Clarence Hotel. People are grouped on the large balcony, others are standing in front of the building. G.R. Dowdy and J. Lewis were the licensees of this hotel 1891-99, later in 1917 the name was changed to the Majestic until its demolition in 1981. There was a hotel on this site since 1857. [General description] The western side of King William Street near Waymouth Street. The Post Office tower is partially visible. The building on the corner of Waymouth Street is Scottish House and next door is Scrymgour the Printer, which is next to Ocean Fire Accident Corporation. Cars and horse drawn vehicles stand in the street as pedestrians pass by. [On back of photograph] Acre 171. King William Street, west side, February 18th 1926. Waymouth Street extended north for 54 and a third yards from the northern alignment of Hall Court. Entrance to Hall Court is shown on the left of the photograph. The nondescript buildings shown through the archway were demolished in 1939 to make way for the new Savings Bank Building. The erection of the new building necessitated the closing of the major part of Waymouth Place. The frontage of the new bank building is on the west side of King William Street on Acres 140 and 171.

King William Street, west side, April 12th 1938. Site of two storey building in centre: the division between acres 171 and 140 lies along the northern wall. Frontage is 8.5 yards. At number 105 King William Street stands the three storey premises of WM Martin tailor and mercer. Next door stands Ernest Saunders and Company estate and financial agents. Several cars and a bicycle are parked at the kerb.

King William Street, west side, left side of the three storey building is 50 yards north of Waymouth Street and frontage is 12 yards. The northern boundary of Acre 171 is on the extreme right of the photograph. The taller building houses the premises of W Puplett and Company. Next door stands Brady's Provision Store specialising in geese, ducks, turkeys, fowls, wheat, barley, oats, flour and bran. Also within this building are the offices of the London and Lancashire Fire and Life Insurance Companies.

[General description] A crowd lines the footpath and centre of King William Street, some perching on top of the W. Puplett & Co. building to catch a glimpse of the Duke of Edinburgh. The street has been decorated with flags and bunting for the occasion. W. Puplett started trading in these premises mid 1867. [General description] Looking south down Topham Street, across the Waymouth Street intersection and further down Bentham Street. A building on Franklin Street can be seen in the distance. On the right is a three storey brick building with a tower which is the premises of Colton, Palmer & Preston Ltd. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 173 / Topham Street, west side / June 6th 1926 / The three and four story portions of Colton's building were erected in 1925 on a site formerly occupied by a corrugated iron structure. Near side of four story part marks the north side of the new building and is 71.5 yards north of Waymouth Street. Far side of three story part is 35 yards north of Waymouth Street.'

[General description] Late 1926 10.4 hp Fiat tourer parked outside the office of M.F. Hamblett, Land and Estate Agent. The Fiat, registration number 68430 was first registered to Headley George Wyatt, electrical fitter, of 29 Marion Place, Prospect. [General description] This three storey brick building is the premises of A.M. Bickford & Sons. Two of the firm's horse drawn delivery wagons are proudly posed in front of the building. On one of the wagons is an advertisement for Maltox, "The tonic drink for all". Advertisements for Bickford's "Our Jack" brand, featuring a kookaburra with the words "sign of quality" are displayed on the building. William Bickford, a chemist, arrived in South Australia in 1839 and established the first druggist in Hindley Street. Upon his death in 1850 his wife, Ann Margaret continued the business which later became A.M. Bickford & Sons in 1871. In 1874 Bickford's bought a cordial factory in Waymouth Street and the family firm still flourishes today (2009), trading as Bickfords Australia. [General description] In between Bickford's building on the left and DHA Laboritories on the right is a large yard with a tall fence. Perhaps these premises are about to undergo re-modelling. [General description] Two men with top hats and tails are posing in front of this two-storey building which has Ionic pillars and a coat of arms on the pediment. There are two large gas lamps either side of the entrance. It was built as Queen's Theatre in 1840 and was also used for public occasions and by the Supreme Court from 1842-46. In 1846 it was rebuilt by G.S. Coppin, known as "the father of Australian Theatre" who renamed it the Royal Victoria. A billboard in front of the Theatre mentions a Mr. Hoskins who was probably William Hoskins, a well-known actor-manager at the time. Bickford and Sons, Manufacturing Chemists are next door. [General description] The facade of McPherson's Iron and Machinery Merchants is built of brick with a decorative pediment and features six arched windows on the second storey. At street level is a row of plate glass shop windows with leaded inserts at the top. Three types of transport are parked at the kerb: A Tourer motor car, a motorcycle with a sidecar and a horse and cart. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 177 & 176 / Waymouth Street, north side / April 21, 1926. / For view of McPherson's and the premises next door east as they opened before the alterations effected in 1924 and 1925 see B 2243 and B 2553. Near side of McPherson's is 31 1/2 yards east of Light Square. Far side of shop fronts is 63 yards east of Light Square, and a little to the right is Gilles Arcade. The premises between the shop fronts and Gilles Arcade were demolished in 1932. For new building see B 6395. The front of McPherson's building was remodelled prior to 1939.
