View of derrick boat winding gear

View of derrick boat winding gear

Description in album containing photograph reads "Captain Sturt's engine room", however a researcher suggests this is not the 'Captain Sturt' but the 'Derrick Boat' [from information supplied]. Additional information supplied by a researcher: "This is not the S.W. Captain Sturt's engine room. A quick glance at any photo of the Captain Sturt will tell you that the height of her engine room is much lower than in this photo. This is the winding gear for the winches on the 90 foot Derrick boat. This is clearly evident by the cables and pulley's running from the engines". (Godson number 145A/183).

Grave of James Poole

Grave of James Poole

Grave of James Poole second in Command to Captain Sturt, 1844-45. Marked tree at J. Poole's grave, near Milparinka Monument erected by the people of Mt. Sturt Station. James Poole was the second-in-command on Charles Sturt's expedition 1844-46. Poole died July 1845, as he was leading a small contingent of the expedition back to Adelaide. This party returned to the main camp at Depot Glen and Poole was buried beneath a grevillea or bloodwood tree, which was then blazed with his initials and the year of his death. The tree still stands today. While explorers usually blazed trees to mark the position of their camps, and their passage across the land, sometimes trees were blazed for other reasons, such as marking the lonely bush grave, or more famously in the case of the explorers Burke and Wills, with the instructions to dig beneath the tree for supplies and instructions.

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.
