Old Bridge over Patawalonga Creek, Glenelg. Thomas King MP advocated damming the Patawalonga in 1876. King represented Sturt in the South Australian House of Assembly from 1876 to 1882. The dam was constructed in 1885 and the bridge connecting Glenelg North with Glenelg was called the King Street Bridge. The wooden bridge was replaced in 1956 by a concrete bridge which was also later replaced

Landseer built a large store on Main Street and gradually added a flour mill and chimney, all of which became the headquarters of the Landseer business which also had interests in paddle steamers and several barges. This photograph has been taken from adjacent to the chimney and flour mill.

Township of Mt. Barker, from the showgrounds. Mount Barker was originally home of the Peramangk Aboriginal people and the actual summit is possibly one of the most sacred Aboriginal sites near Adelaide. Mount Barker was sighted by Captain Charles Sturt in 1830 and surveyed by Duncan McFarlane in 1839 for the possibility of farming wheat and grain.

The Mount Gambier Roller Four Mill was built in 1885 on the corner of Sturt Street and Bay Road, by Thomas Henry Williams. The mill was expanded in the late 1890s and 1900. Thomas Williams was also on the town council in 1876 and was mayor from 1881 - 1882. He was the first man to own a motor car in Mount Gambier. This was the fourth mill built by Thomas Williams. His second mill, the Commercial Steam Flour Mill, was located on Percy Street, and built in 1867.

Point McLeay Mission Station now known as Raukkan, in South Australia. Raukkan means meeting place in the Ngarrindjeri language. For thousand of years this place was an important meeting place and location of the Grand Tendi (Parliament) The Ngarrindjeri people fed and cared for Sturt's starving party. In 1860 the Aborigines' Friends' Association was granted 107 hectares to establish a mission. They could never become self sufficient due to the poor quality of the land given. Since 1974 the Raukkan has been administered by the Ngarrindjeri people.

Dr. John Harris Browne

Dr. John Harris Browne

Portrait of Dr John Harris Browne. Reproduced from Cockburn's "Pastoral Pioneers" vol.1, page 32. J Harris Browne was an explorer in Australia and a pioneer pastoralist. He joined Sturt's expedition to Central Australia as surgeon. He was brother to William James Browne who was also a qualified physician and a successful pastoralist.
