Church of Christ, Point Sturt

Church of Christ, Point Sturt. Point Sturt was formerly known as Sturt Peninsula and sits on the banks of Lake Alexandrina, located at the end of the Murray River just north of the Cooroong. The original inhabitants were the Ngarrindjeri, many of whom died from European diseases at first exposure in the early 1800s. Point Sturt Church has the honour of being the oldest rural congregation of Churches of Christ in Australia. A small building was erected at Point Sturt in 1861 and opened free of debt. Early evangelistic efforts saw 42 people added to the congregation in one year alone

According to Burke's 'The Landed Gentry' entry for the Sturt pedigree he died in 1837, so this image is either from the earliest photographic period, the date of death is inaccurate, or the subject is another person.

Upper Sturt

House at Upper Sturt built in 1866 by F.H.Newcombe. The house has been identified as the residence to the left of, and now incorporated into, the Upper Sturt General Store, 191 Upper Sturt Road. Originally, the house was simply a residence. The store first operated out of the front room of the house in the late 1940's or early 1950's. The photo was identified by Frank Heard, whose family lived there from 1954 to 1964 and expanded the shop and set up the petrol station and a garage.
