New Hall at Finniss

New Hall at Finniss

Newly built hall at Finniss which was opened on June 12th 1924. The hall appears to be constructed using local stone, red bricks around the windows and doorways and has an iron roof. There is a large plaque near the front door and a water tank visible at the back of the hall. This photograph was reproduced in the Chronicle on June 21st 1924.

[General description] The Wesleyan Chapel at Fulham, partially obscured by large shrubs. It is a plain brick building with a white picket fence. It was built by John White on part of his 'Fulham Farm' property, with the family vault nearby. [Detail from an 'in memoriam' card for Barbara White - see PRG 335/19/16].

Home for Incurables in the Adelaide suburb of Fullarton. Purchased in 1879 for 1,700 Pound the large building has wrought iron trimmed verandahs. It was surrounded by 9 acres of Eucalyptus trees and parklands. The home was renamed The Julia Farr Centre in 1981. [On back of photograph] "Home for Incurables, Adelaide (Fullarton) 1872-86".

[General description] The Esplanade and Jetty, viewed from the water, are crowded with people on occasion of the visit of Australia's fleet, probably in February 1914 when the Australian warships Australia, Melbourne, and Sydney moored at Glenelg. The Town Hall displays a large banner welcoming the fleet and bunting is flying. A number of small craft are anchored near the jetty. [On back of photograph] 'Town Hall etc. Glenelg / 1913'.

[General description] Large crowds have come out to see this parade, part of the popular Glenelg Carnival in 1930. The balcony of the Grand Residential Hotel is crowded as well as Jetty Road. There are many floats including one in the foreground which features a young lady standing in front of a shell wearing a sash (beauty contestant?) and water skiing behind a shark. [General description] Proclamation Day crowd at Glenelg beach. In the foreground people wander around a variety of refreshment and souvenir seller's tents. Footbridge over the Patawalonga, Glenelg in approximately 1895. The bridge is on the same site as the bridge in use in 1939. The wooden bridge spans the almost empty Patawalonga and connects and sand dunes to the rest of Glenelg but unfortunately causes a large build up of seaweed. The name Patawalonga derives from the Aboriginal words for "The place of branches of the swamp gum".

[General description] A large holiday crowd at Glenelg. The jetty is completely packed with people in their Sunday best, many more crowd the foreshore where tents and marquees have been erected for the occasion. Small craft are moored next to the jetty.

A horse drawn carriage stands in the foreground between the Pier Hotel to the south and the Glenelg Institute Building (later Glenelg Town Hall) to the north. The cupula seen in the photograph was added in 1884. Many people have gathered on the jetty to welcome the steamer

[General description] Surrounded by gum trees, this round tower is two storeys tall and is constructed of stone with brick quoins around its door and windows, which appear to be of the sash type. Around the top of the tower a crennulated effect has been created using decorative brickwork. Low stone buildings can be seen in the background. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the Mail, Sep. 4, 1926 / Observation tower situated in the grounds of Birksgate, Glen Osmond. It was the usual means of notifying neighbours, diggers etc. that a mail steamer was approaching. Built about 1860 by Sir Thomas Elder. About 45ft high. On top was a cannon and a flagpole used by Sir Thomas Elder for signalling. Disused for this purpose by 1890 or perhaps sooner. (Above information taken from the Mail* but the signalling part is largely discredited by Mr. A.T. Saunders). *For this cutting, see Newspaper Cuttings, Vol. 2, p. 100'.

Psychiatric Hospital (Lunatic Asylum) situated at Parkside and photographed in the 1870's. It was opened by the government in 1870 with fifty male patients. By 1873 there were 70 men and 50 women residents. The asylum had large gardens which grew vegetables for the patients, sheep, cattle and pigs were also reared for food.

A researcher has provided the following information: Going by the direction the mule team is facing, they have crossed Cooper Creek already, and are facing the direction to transport the wool (probably Cordillo Wool clip) south to the railhead at Marree, or Farina.

[General description] Set amongst gum trees, this (probably) sandstone Methodist Church building features twin front doors with pointed archways. [General descripiton] Cattle graze in the foreground of this view of the Islington Railway workshops. It is a large complex of buildings where locomotives, rolling stock and tramcars were built and maintained and even armaments were produced during World War Two. [General description] The Grange is seen on the left and the cottage section which abuts it is on the right. There are large palm trees in front and behind the house, and a picket fence runs across the front od the property. The Grange was built in 1840 and was the home of Captain Sturt and his family from then until 1853 when they returned to England. It was one of the earliest homes built in the district. It was built of brick in two distinct sections which were constructed a year apart. The white rendered section was the nursery wing. The property had an extensive garden with grapes,an orchard of pear, plum and apple trees. Captain Sturt was a keen gardener and was President of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia. The photograph shows the single storey house flanked by large palm trees behind a picket fence and was taken in 1928
