Summary

[General description] Surrounded by gum trees, this round tower is two storeys tall and is constructed of stone with brick quoins around its door and windows, which appear to be of the sash type. Around the top of the tower a crennulated effect has been created using decorative brickwork. Low stone buildings can be seen in the background. [On back of photograph] 'Reproduced in the Mail, Sep. 4, 1926 / Observation tower situated in the grounds of Birksgate, Glen Osmond. It was the usual means of notifying neighbours, diggers etc. that a mail steamer was approaching. Built about 1860 by Sir Thomas Elder. About 45ft high. On top was a cannon and a flagpole used by Sir Thomas Elder for signalling. Disused for this purpose by 1890 or perhaps sooner.
