Anlaby Station
Outbuildings at Anlaby Station. Frederick Hansborough Dutton took the lease on the property near Kapunda and named it Anlaby for a village in Yorkshire, the village of his sister's husband. Analby Station is the oldest merino stud in Australia and plays an important part in South Australia's history. The Duttons ran it as a grand English estate employing seventy staff. The property contained forty large outbuildings including a manor house, huge shearing shed and impressive stable block.

[General description] A few pedestrians and a horse and cart meander along the unsealed road winding uphill into the township of Ardrossan. The Royal Oak Hotel can be seen on top of the hill. Other buildings seen on the left display large advertisements for Fry's Cocoa, Lion Flour, Burford's candles and soap and Robur Tea. [General description] Various staff, customers and locals have gathered in front of the shingle roofed Golden Cross Inn to pose for the photographer, along with two saddle horses and a man with a horse and cart. Barossa Reservoir was built between 1899 and 1902 to supply water to Gawler. The thin arch of the retaining wall curved against the pressure of the water and was thought radical at the time. Today the dam is notabled for its parabola effect (whispering wall) Large stones and old tram rails were used to strenghten the dam wall

Clayton Congregational Church, Kensington in the 1890's. Sweet Adelaide 473. The suburb the church stands in is now known as Beulah Park. During 1855 a large and commanding site on the corner of Portrush Road (then known as Kensington Terrace) and The Parade (then East Parade) was purchased. A stone and brick church was built in 1856. A gallery was added to the chapel in 1862. At the time of this photograph a fine new organ built by JE Dodd and Sons was installed. The church had seating for 560 people.

Lutheran Church, Blyth. St Petri Church was constructed in 1886 to service the large Lutheran community which settled in the area. The attractive and prominent tower of cut stone with rendered quoins was built in 1889 and housed a bell sent from Germany by Kaiser Wilhelm the First.

The town was originally called Cox Creek but the name changed later to Bridgewater when the adjacent flour mill was built by John Dunn. This photograph shows stacks of grain sacks ready to be ground at the mill. The large water wheel can be seen at the side of the mill

[General description] This two storey stone Victorian Gothic building features a central gable, topped with a cupola. There is decorative brickwork around its doors and windows, and a small balcony over its front door. A large ground floor verandah has carved wooden detail including an archway. Funds were raised for this building by William Townsend, M.P., the founder of South Australian Institution for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb. Building commenced in 1876 and was completed in 1878 at the cost of £4,289. [On back of photograph] 'Blind, Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Brighton / 1878-86'.

Stately residence of Hon J. Hodgkiss, Hove with two women riding sidesaddle near the front entrance. John Hodgkiss (1820-1897) was a businessman and a politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. After arriving from England in 1849 he owned businesses in Hindley Street and Rundle Street. He died at his residence, Lawn House, at Brighton. In 1862 he planted river red gums along the driveway to the residence, Frank Hayward House. The house was built in 1860. Minda purchased the property from Hodgkiss' niece and moved in there in 1911. The photograph shows a large two storey brick house with quoins, shutters on all six upper floor windows. A painted striped verandah runs along the front of the house and meets at the portico over the front entrance. The formal gardens are lined with low hedges which divide the geometric flower-filled garden beds.

Burnside, looking South from the creek at a point about 200 or 300 yards east of Burnside Road and about 150 yards north of High Street. (Sweet Adelaide 834). Another copy is at B 72111/94. The photograph shows the rolling grassy Adelaide Hills in the background sparsely dotted with trees. Several large homes, all with plenty of land surrounding them can be seen on the plains. A field is in the foreground and two small boys are standing in front of a fence.

Sliding Rock Mine, Cadnia, near Beltana. At the time of the reproduction of this photo in the "Observer", July 8, 1922, the mine was over fifty years old. Although the mine was no longer in operation there was a considerable amount of valuable machinery at the site. It produced a large amount of copper in its time.
