Henley Beach Hotel, built in 1879 by T.A. Stewart. The hotel, with its large verandahs, overlooks sand dunes and the sea. This photo was taken during W. McNamee's proprietorship from 1891-98.

Thomas Magarey's Mill and cottage, between Manton and Roberts Streets Hindmarsh, facing the River Torrens. The Mill was demolished about 1903, it incorporated some of John Ridley's Mill machinery. Thomas Magarey [1825-1902] was a businessman and Churches of Christ founder in South Australia. In 1845 he settled at Noarlunga and managed a flour mill. In 1850 he bought John Ridley's flour mill at Hindmarsh. He was a successful businessman and built a large house at Enfield which boasted a Turkish bath and telescope to study the stars. He was founding shareholder of the Bank of Adelaide, part owner of "The Register", founding member of the Adelaide Club and member of both Lower and Upper Houses. The photograph shows the mill with its rounded iron roof, a house and a tall brick chimney.

[General description] This smart new single storey stone building has large windows with decorative mullion tops and a gabled and tiled roof. An arched door connects two wings of the building. [General description] This two storey corner building has two street fronts, in mirror image, with a crenullated enclosed verandah on the first floor corner with a wide verandah at street level, partly enclosed. [General description] This newly renovated two storey building was acquired for theSavings Bank of S.A. in 1909. It was previously the premises of the E.,S.,& A. Bank. Abutting the building is E. Thomas, Tobacconist with advertisements in its windows for American Eagle Twist and Yankee Doodle Plug tobacco. A large telegraph pole stands in front of the building.

Opening of Prince Alfred College in 1869. The foundation stone was laid for the main building in 1869 by HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh. The first students commenced at the college in 1869. The photograph shows a large tent that has been erected as part of the celebrations. Men and women mingle on the area in front of the school building.

Station home Killapaninna Mission Station - large group of workers, residents and children gathered around a small campfire. The Lutheran church pioneered this Bethesda Mission on the Birdsville Track near Lake Killalpaninna. The mission was later extended to an outstation on the shore of Lake Kopperamanna. Lake Killalpaninna is about 40 kms south of Coopers Creek. The missions fell into decline and were closed by the government in 1915

Lowan Homestead

Lowan Homestead

[On back of photograph] 'Homestead at Lowan, Kalangadoo. Built by W.A. Crouch in 1869 and opened 1870. Purchased by McGregor and Son in 1904 and resold to the Government 1925-6.' [General Description] Partially obscured by a large Norfolk Island pine tree is a handsome two storey brick residence. It was built by William Allen Crouch who came to Australia in 1845 and, having studied architecture in England, designed many of Mount Gambier's early buildings. The verandah railings feature ornate iron lace and the gable ends have an carved wooden trim topped with a filial. See W.A. Crouch's portrait at B 27050.
