[General description] The township of Clarendon with the vineyard of the Clarendon Winery covering the hillside. It was reputedly planted by John Morphett in 1848 who later sold it to Edward Peake who built the winery (large building on upper left) in 1858 and expanded the vineyard. Weir at Clarendon built between 1894-1896 was designed to pool water from the Mount Bold Reservoir on the Onkaparinga River. The Clarendon Weir wall was originally constructed with large blocks of Macclesfield marble.

Council Chamber, Clarendon

Council Chamber at Clarendon was built in 1854 as the home of the Bible Christian Community until the Methodist Union in 1899-1900. The church building was then sold to the Clarendon Council. The building was constructed of line-pointed sandstone rubble with large shaped stones as quoins and arched windows and had a slate roof.

Panoramic view of Clarendon on Onkaparinga River. The Kaurna people were the original inhabitants of this area. The land was surveyed in 1840 and vineyards were planted in 1846 on land purchased by English benefactor William Augustine Leigh. By 1866 the town was a regional centre where wheat, peas and potatoes were largely grown.

Trussell family members outside Cobdogla Station Homestead, including Mary Ann and several of her children. Her husband James Trussell was the Manager of Cobdogla Station, which was owned by the Chambers Brothers of Adelaide. Note the thatched roof of the homestead. From information provided by a family member, the people in this image standing and sitting (centre) are: Helena Maud, Jessie Mary , Annie Eliza , Isabel Kirwin Trussell, George James and Albert Murray Trussell. Of the two ladies to the right of the photo, the older lady (in grey) is Mary Ann Trussell (nee Thomas), wife of James Trussell (Manager of the Chambers Bros property known as Cobdogla Station) and the mother of the 6 younger people. The lady in black standing alongside Mrs Trussell is Olive Maud Thomas (niece of Mrs Trussell). The Cobdogla Station Homestead was built on land originally taken up by John Chambers before any official surveys were made of the area. In some of his explorations, John McDouall Stuart used and valued horses bred at Cobdogla station, including on his sixth and final expedition of 1861-62. This expedition crossed the continent from south to north, and much of this route was later used for the path of the Overland Telegraph Line. The Cobdogla horses were branded half-circle C. The whitewashed buildings are thatched and are surrounded by a picket fence. There are outhouses and a large chimney at one end of the homestead.

[General description] The newly completed school buildings stand in open space in front of a stand of large gum trees and a view of the hills. This is possibly the opening day of the school as there appears to be both parents and children attending, wearing their 'Sunday best' clothes. Church at Old Coonattoo Station. Philip Butler took up some pastoral leases in 1840 which became known as Coonatto Station. The station had a reputation for good hospitality and visiting missionary priests and missionaries were always welcome. This small church was built on the property. This singular building had a chimney on one side and a large cellar beneath. The first bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short, held services in the church. The station name Coonatto comes from the Aboriginal word for false sandalwood tree which was abundant in the area

Corny Point: Loading wheat to the Argosy Lemal. According to a researcher, the vessel is not the Argosy Lemal, which was a large three masted steel schooner. This vessel is a wooden double ended ketch which appears to be the "Reginald M".

Workers from Murrays Biscuit Factory taking a break. Alexander Murray who arrived in South Australia on the "India" in 1840 planted fruit trees, built a jam and biscuit factory and employed many of the local men and women. Some women even walked from Hahndorf once a week to work at the factory. Eventually the firm became known as A Murray and Son. In 1876 the factory was in full production turning out large quantities of jam and biscuits

Public School, Crystal Brook - children and teachers assembled outside the building. The Public School was opened in 1877 and closed in 1911. Crystal Brook West Public School was opened in 1885, had a name change to Nucom in 1948 and was later closed in 1971. This photograph was taken in 1932 and shows a large number of students.

Curramulka Hotel

Curramulka Hotel, Curramulka. Curramulka is situatedon the Yorke Peninsula north east of Minlaton. Pastoralists established sheep runs in the 1870's. The township was surveyed in 1878. The single storey stone hotel has a large verandah. The photograph shows a horse tethered to a hitching post outside the hotel and a man and child are nearby.

[On back of photograph] 'Landing the cable at Port Darwin. From Captain Sweet's negative.' [General description] A large group of men are holding the cable, whilst officials look on. Two draught horses are present indicationg that horse power had been used to assist. Further out from shore men in small boats can be seen supporting the cable above the water. In the distance is the ship 'Hibernia'. This is in preparation for the connection to overland telegraph on the 7th November 1871. See Hodder's History of SA, v. 2, p. 26 and SA Register February 10, 1872, 3E. Both photographs held show Sweet anchor symbol, and the copy in Sweet Collection folder 5 has additional Sweet number (Sweet Adelaide [602?]).

This oil sketch on paper of a landscape including Fort Point, Port Darwin, illustrates the main camp of the Northern Territory Survey Expedition (1868-1870). This work is naive in comparison to other works painted by the same artist from this group. Hoare has composed this scene from an offshore vantage point, perhaps from a boat. The main focus of the work is a large, tree covered plateau, which is very close to the shoreline. This area is crowned with what is most likely an english flag attached to a tall pole. To the left, sheltered by the land mass is a camp of approximately a dozen white tents, pitched in front of a few, more permanent timber structures. To the far right, on a narrow beach at the bottom of the plateau and possibly included to represent scale, are tiny figures and horses. They appear to be preparing to load or unload a vessel by the jetty. To the left, the artist has included a figure driving a horse and cart on the beach.

[General description] The Port Darwin jetty curves across the centre of this view of sea and sky where a large four masted barque, the 'Euphrates' is moored. This ship was carrying railway iron when it ran aground near Darwin. There is a smaller three masted square rigged vessel behind her. Jetty, Port Darwin. Length of approach of the "T" shaped jetty is 418 feet, length of head is 558 feet, depth at low water is 23-28 feet, rise of the tide is 25 feet. A large steam boat is tied up at the jetty.

Palmerston. Warden's office. This wooden slatted building has a galvanised iron roof and is raised off the ground on piles. Deckchairs are positioned on the verandah and a large water tank can be seen in front of the office.

Palmerston. Police Station which was very close to the Police Station erected subsequently. The wooden building which had window frames with vertical shutters to catch any breezes had a galvanised tin roof and a large water tank. The office had been patched with canvas at one end.

Police Inspector's Residence about 1880. Inspector Paul Foelsche and troopers arrived to establish the first proper constabularary in 1870. The stone residence has a wide verandah around two sides of the large building.

Town Hall, (Darwin) Palmerston was built in 1883 and provided room for the Council, Institute, reading room and library. It was constructed of local stone with cypress pine for the floor and roof. It became the focus of many large social gatherings as well as being home of the Local Court and District Court

Darwin & Palmerston Botanic Garden sisal hemp machinery. The Northern Territory Times and Gazette of 10 September 1909 reports the import of ths machinery by the Curator of the Botanic Gardens, for the purposes of starting up production of sisal hemp. Large areas of sisal had been planted in the Gardens, but the venture failed due to cheap imports, local labour costs and the temperamental imported machinery.

Cross Keys Inn at Dry Creek is a substantial two storey building with a central tower-like structure, built in 1912, a rebuild of an earlier hotel has been on this site since 1849. Several people are posing for the photographer in front of the building along with two large drays stacked with hay, drawn by horse teams.

Echunga Sluicing Works on day of opening by the Hon. T. Price, 13 July 1906. During this period the Euchunga Hydraulic Gold Sluicing Company made an attempt to instigate a payable large scale operation by treating the alluvium in bulk. However, this was unsuccessful as the alluvial material was much lower in grade than first epected. The photograph shows Premier Tom Price opening the sluicing works watched by crowds of onlookers

[General description] One of the two railway viaducts at Eden Hills, known as the Sleeps Hill viaducts after the pioneer Samuel Sleep who owned the property. At the time they were on the Nairne line, which later became part of the Melbourne line. Built in 1882 by an American company, they were in use until 1919 when route changes made them redundant and they were dismantled in 1920. See B 11704 for a view of construction work. Fernhill, property of Henry Field, brother of Lieut. Field (of the Rapid), and son in law of Commander F. Servante, the original owner of the property. Fernhill, at Dashwood Gully, built by Commander Frederick (P.F.) Servante 1861-2. The following verse appears under the artwork: 'Fond are the memories that bring thee nigh / E'en now unto my heart I with pleasure I / Recall thy circle of dear friends, and still / Ne'er cease to think of thee with love. Fernhill'. In 1884 Mrs Henry Field was in possession of Ferntree (nee Mary Servante). Captain Frederick Servante (1798-1872) arrived in the "Murray" in 1861 and during 1961-62 built a home in Dashwood Gully calling it Fernhill. The name originated in Essex, England and the house and gardens offered respite from the dust and mosquitoes in the middle of the Adelaide summer. The photograph shows a large home partially hidden behind trees and surounded by hills. A rough road passes up the gully.

View of Eudunda Railway Station which was once a station on the Morgan railway line from 1878 until it closed. A large train shed and goods trucks can be seen on the railway lines. Narcoota Springs were nearby.This was a bustling stopover and watering place for the earliest explorers and pioneer overlanders

Farina

Storekeeper's premises, (J.W. Manfield) at Farina. Farina was a railhead at the edge of the desert near Marree. It was settled in 1878 and grew to its peak in the late 1880s when it sported an underground bakery, two hotels, bank, two breweries, store, church, five blacksmiths, school and brothel. It is now a ghost town. The photograph shows theowners and workers outside the saddlers and the General Store of Mr JW Manfield. The saddlers are holding their tools of trade and large leather saddle bags. The store is also an agency for forwarding and receiving goods.
