Telephone Exchange building, Franklin Street north side. This photograph shows a large grid of conductors and wires standing in front of the building. Compare with B 1801 taken in 1917. See also B 4519. The building has a frontage of 13 and a half yards, its left side being opposite the west side of Victoria Square. The building on the left which houses a printers and a booking office stands on the south east corner of Acre 238.

[General description] This view from an elevated postion shows city buildings, road traffic and street trees along North Terrace, with the Adelaide Hills as a backdrop. Transport is mostly motor car and electric tram, but a few horse drawn vehicles can be seen. The old Parliament House building appears on the left, with its clock. Note the double decker motor omnibus in the foreground. [General description] This hotel opened in 1894 as the South Australian Hotel, replacing the original smaller building previously on the site. It was a luxury hotel which became an Adelaide icon, famous internationally. It was eventually demolished in 1971 to make way for a new hotel. [General description] Adelaide's iconic South Australian Hotel, established 1879. This view was taken in 1894 after major renovations, the architect being Alfred Wells, the licensee G. Flecker. The people posing in front of the Italianate style building with arched doors and windows are probably the staff. More renovations were undertaken in 1899-1900 under licensee E. Alexander when balconies were added. Sadly demolished in 1971 in spite of public protest. The structure on the left is the former Bank of South Australia. [General description] Gresham Hotel, Adelaide. In front of the hotel a top-hatted gentleman in a smart carriage can be seen (in the centre left of the view) amongst other horse drawn traffic. A workman appears to be cleaning the gutter of the verandah. [General description] This row of three storey stone buildings are warehouses for L. & J. Hayman, J. Felstead and J. Reid & Sons. Note the loading doors on the first and second floors and the chain pulleys hanging down the front of the building to hoist loads. In the left foreground is the Number 29 Adelaide-Glenelg Railways Bus, a double decker with an open top, its passengers enjoying the sunshine. One of the buildings is in process of remodelling. [General description] This photograph of Gollin's North Terrace building has been taken from the opposite side of the road. Walter and George Gollin founded the trading firm of Gollin and Company Pty. Ltd. in Adelaide in 1879. It expanded interstate and by the early twentieth century was represented internationally. Seen on the left is part of the Gresham Hotel. Franklin Street, Adelaide, north side. The centre building is the Telephone Exchange, with its small balcony on which two staff members are taking a break. The building has a frontage of 13 and a half yards, its left side being opposite the west side of Victoria Square. The building on the left, which houses both the Porter & Barnett Engraving Studio and Millington & Appelkamp Practical Tailors, stands on the south east corner of Acre 238.

[General description] Two coaches stand next to Hassell and Son's Central Printing Office in Franklin Street. The nearest one is drawn by a five horse team, people are seated in tiers on the outside of the coach and are crammed into the inside. Other people stand in the street nearby, possibly waiting to board or see off passengers. The GPO tower is seen in the background. [General description] This view is of the back lane behind the Franklin Motor Company, and the rear of its newly completed premises. This motor company is typical of many similar businesses that flourished with the rapid takeup of the motor car during the twenties. The car parked in the foreground is a Dodge 23.8 h.p. tourer owned by D. Norton of Croydon. The next car along is a 19.6 H.P. Dort, owned by E.O.A. Allen of Prospect.
