[General description] Shiny new cars can be seen in the showroom windows of two motor firms which occupy this new building which is Art Deco in its design. Two smart cars are parked at the kerb near a petrol bowser. On the right a two storey house, huddled against the new building, is for sale with agents F.W. Bullock and Company. Athol Court, off Victoria Place, off Grote St. The view shows a portion of a row of six cottages running parallel with Franklin Street and facing south. Taken on April 3, 1924, just prior to their demolition to make way for a galvanized iron garage. Athol court lies on the southern boundary of Acre 264. See B 2213 for another view of these cottages.

The confidence expressed by the new Mann's Motors' building reflects the growing popularity of the motor car. The car by the bowsers is a Chevrolet tourer, 21.7 horsepower, registration number 38420, owned by Mann's. The left side of the building is 25 yards east of Young Street. Frontage is 31 yards. The shiny motor cars in the window of the Austin showroom contrast with the transport of an earlier era; a delivery horse harnessed to a cart and feeding from a nosebag in front of Turner's. [General description] This Church was built by New Connexion Church minister James Maughan in 1863. In 1888 the New Connexion Church merged with the Bible Christians, and in 1900 the church building became the Central Methodist Mission. Even though this original church has been replaced (in 1965) the name Maughan Church continues to survive. It is seen from the opposite side of Franklin street with the unsealed road in the foreground. Horse tram tracks are visible in the centre of the road. On either side of the church are business premises. [General description] The prominent tower of the Maughan Church is seen silhouetted against the sky. Designed by architect James Macgeorge, this bluestone church was built in 1866 and known as the Methodist New Connexion Church. It was later named the Maughan Church after its pioneering minister, James Maughan. This spire was a landmark until the demolition and subsequent replacement of the church circa 1965. Acre 265.Methodist New Connexion Church (afterwards called Maughan Church) At East corner of Pitt Street and Franklin Street. Probably taken in the 1860's. Methodist New Connexion Church opened in 1864 by James Maughan could hold 600 people. After his death the church merged with the Bible Christians Church in Young Street. Maughan Church became the main Bible Christian Church in the city.

Acre 265 Methodist New Connexion Church about 1870 East corner of Franklin Street and Pitt Street. The architect was James MacGeorge. It is 150 feet high and the tower is 12 square feet internally. It was constructed to have bells later. The foundation stone was laid for this Gothic styled church in January 1864. A bottle was placed under the foundation stone containing all coins of the day plus current newspapers, rules of the Connexion, the days proceedings and names at architect, minister etc.

[General description] The western side of Victoria Square near Franklin Street. Several shop fronts have been built into the Morialta Chambers. At the far end stands the Windsor Castle Hotel and buildings at the back of the General Post Office can be seen in the background. Several cars are angled parked at the kerb and pedestrians are moving about their business. [On back of photograph] Acre 267. Victoria Square, west side, 22nd February, 1926. The Victoria Square gardens, surrounded by wrought iron fencing, are viewed through telegraph wires producing an interesting effect. In the foreground cab horses are feeding from nosebags. The National Mutual Life building is seen on the opposite side of the Square in its original position on the corner of Grote Street. In 1979, the facade of this building and its original roof were moved 34 metres north to make way for the SGIC Building.
