Three small children are standing outside the shop on this wet day. In Ackland Street a horse and cart wait patiently and further down the street is Wilson's Cash Store and the Red Cross Building. [General description] The Somerset Hotel is a two storey building with wide verandahs and balconies. It was established in 1851 and demolished in September 1991. On the right is Maughan Thiem Motor Co., on the extreme left is City Motors, specialising in Holden. Above the main arched doorway on both floors the keystone is carved with a human face. The building was used by the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, South Australia from 1884. Note the empty clock tower; the clock was eventually donated by Sir Lavington Bonython in 1935. In the centre of the road, in the distance, Gouge's Fountain can just be seen.

An ornamental urn with four lion's heads is mounted on a parapet seen in the right foreground. Note the iron railings around the Victoria Square gardens.

In the foreground some boys are sitting on the iron railings which surround the Square. The new General Post Office, built in the late 1860s, is on the extreme left. The Town Hall, also recently completed, is on the right. Further along on the left side of the road, the tower of the Advertiser building can be seen. A horse and cart stands in the left foreground and more horse drawn vehicles for hire are waiting in the centre of the road.

The dark clock face indicates that this photo was taken before December 13th, 1875 when the clock was set in motion. The new clock faces were made of Chance's white opal glass and illuminated at night.
