Liverpool Lt Alby Union Carbide Factories Ltd. c.1923/4 became the German screw steamship 'Bollan' reg. Hamburg. Fate unknown. Ref 5 Vol 2 = torpedoed on Feb 15, 1916 but was later towed into port and repaired and engine then added. Also further experience with torpedoes in April 1918. (In Section 4, of Volume 9 is a photograph of this ship but I find no evidence that she was ever owned by JD Newton, as the ship was built after his death and the company did not survive the owner) Volume 9, with the 'Lobo' in Port Adelaide and at Port Chalmers in New Zealand)] ['Lobo' = iron barque, 938 tons, ON76503. 209.0 x 32.4 x 19.9. Built 1877 (3) Osbourne, Graham and Co. Sunderland. Owners: TR Shallcross, registered Liverpool, then Shallcross and Higham, later Japp and Kirby. Became 'Hans Wagner' then 'Drammenseren' of Norway. As 'Hans Wagner' was driven shore in the gale of Sept. 1, 1902 at Port Elizabeth, Algoa Bay South Africa (Sydney Morning Herlad Sept. 4, 1902).

The iron barque 'Broughton', 600 tons, under sail [iron barque 600 tons. ON60054, 172.0 x 27.9 x 18.3. Built 1868 (1) Harland and Wolff, Belfast. Owners: T H Ismay registered Liverpool by 1877. William Thomas reg. Swansea, later Watkins and Jenkins of Swansea, then D. Jenkins reg. Swansea. NB while included in Ireland and Porter section I find no reference to these owners holding this ship - note by Edwardes). John Chalk was the master and part owner of the 'Broughton' from 1892 until his death at sea in 1898. His last voyage started in Jaunary 1896 to trade with South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. He left Newcastle, NSW in 1898 on his way to Coquimbo, Chile, then to the UK [additional information supplied by a researcher].
