General notes

One of the ships owned by McDiarmid Greenshields and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

The vessel was built by W H Potter of Liverpool in 1881 and lost 10 June 1912 off Newfoundland. In 1905 she was subject to a claim for salvage arising from a grounding on the Essex (England) coast. Whilst at Harwich Port awaiting the outcome of the case it is thought that she inspired the McLearon's to also give the name Thalatta to the Thames sailing barge they were constructing. The sailing barge Thalatta is currently sailing as a schools ship under the flag of The East Coast Sail Trust based in Maldon Essex. (information supplied by a researcher).
