Hindley Street, Adelaide

Hindley Street, Adelaide

Grant's Coffee Palace, Hindley street, Adelaide. Designed by architect Albert Selmar Conrad, and built in 1903, the Austral Stores originally comprised 12 shops and dwellings. After 1908 the building operated as Grant's Coffee Palace, a 'coffee palace' being a popular alternative to hotels after the growth of the temperance movement. In 1919 it was taken over by John West, and has been known as West's Coffee Palace ever since. The paired and turreted towers, projecting gables, red brick and render walls, Byzantine details and steep terracotta tiled roof are characteristic of the Federation period. Right side of Grant's is 36 yards west of Victoria Street and frontage is 62.5 yards. For views taken in 1960, see B 14327-29.

West Terrace Hotel, Waymouth Street

The West Terrace Hotel. East corner of Waymouth Street and Albert Street, Waymouth Street frontage is 13 yards and Albert Street frontage is 12 yards. This hotel on Waymouth Street and the east corner of Prince Court is not actually on West Terrace as its name suggests. It existed from 1856 until 1921. It had a major renovation in 1879 and was converted for a new purpose in 1965. At the time of this photograph the proprietor was J. Rogers (1887-1893). Several men and a lad are standing in the doorway. A toast is being made by one of the men. In the late 1960's it became a boarding huse for mostly short term residents and a few long term. The corner doorway was closed in and became a small letterbox. The balcony was removed as it was sagging. Out the back there was an almond tree, and men's urinal and shower room. Mostly men lived here with alcohol problems and some new migrants. Upstairs were 6 rooms for boarders and a bathroom at the end of the hallway.
