[General description] Gresham Hotel, Adelaide. In front of the hotel a top-hatted gentleman in a smart carriage can be seen (in the centre left of the view) amongst other horse drawn traffic. A workman appears to be cleaning the gutter of the verandah. Franklin Street, Adelaide, north side, corner of Eliza Street, on the 27th January, 1925. The Bristol Hotel [from 1940 known as the Hotel Franklin] was the meeting place of the Trades and Labour Council from its inception in 1884 until 1888 when the first Trades Hall was built. The extreme left of the photograph is 17 yards west of Eliza Street, and Young Street is on the extreme right. The cottages on the west corner of Eliza Street are in process of being demolished. Morphett Street, Adelaide, north west corner of Grote Street, on the 4th June, 1925. The iron premises on the corner is occupied by the Adelaide Motor Exchange Agency and Leaman & Co., Central Provision Stores. This building was demolished in 1925. For the new building, see B 3272 & B 4054. The left side of Hepburn's is 30 yards west of Morphett Street. The far side of Central Provision Stores is 29 yards north of Grote Street.

St Patrick's Church, Grote Street, Adelaide

St. Patrick's Church, and, on the left, the Archbishop's residence, situated on the north east corner of Grote Street and West Terrace, Adelaide. The original church was consecrated in 1845 by the first Catholic Bishop of Adelaide, Dr. Francis Murphy, and was attended by the many Irish Catholics who lived in Adelaide's west. This church was demolished in 1959, having been replaced by a later building on this site,circa 1912, which now [in 2006] serves the Croatian and Indonesian Catholic communities. See B 2457 for the new church.

[General description] The new facade of the Arab Steed Hotel is Art Deco in style, featuring a ceramic tiled 'public house' dado, a corner balcony and shuttered windows. The five, two-storey terraces attached to the hotel were built in 1877 by William Holmesby and, although having a different owner, were designed to complement the hotel. Maynard John Lucas is the licensee at the time this photograph was taken. Monument on the site of the first survey of Adelaide

View of the monument situated on the north-west corner of North and West Terraces marking the starting point for Colonel William Light's survey of Adelaide. The plaque reads: 'Hereabouts in January 1837, the survey of the City of Adelaide was begun. Here, also in 1837, were erected the first public offices - Land and Survey - of the Province of South Australia. Adjoining these offices, which were built of wood, were the dwellings of James Hurtle Fisher, the first Resident Commissioner, and William Light, first Surveyor General. The buildings were destroyed by fire on January 22nd 1839. Erected by the City Council 1928'. Also includes a close-up of the plaque.

[General description] This view of city street and buildings is dominated by the cooling towers of the Adelaide Electric Supply Company which was founded in 1904. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 156, 157 / Pirie Street, north side. / June 15, 1926. / The two storey building in foreground is 38 1/2 yards west of East Terrace. East face of Electric Supply Co.'s cooling towers is 53 yards west of East Terrace and measures about 55 yards. Pirie Street frontage frontage of towers measures 17.5 yards. Cooling towers demolished in 1926.'

St. Patrick's Church, Grote Street, Adelaide

St. Patrick's Church, Grote Street, Adelaide, on the 28th February 1925. Designed by Woods Bagot, in the Renaissance style, it was erected in 1914 to replace an earlier church which became too small. Due to lack of funds, it was never completed to the grandeur of its original design, which included a dome. This view was reproduced in the 'Chronicle', February 28th, 1925, along with a view of the original building used by the church. The right side of the church is 17 yards west of Burton Avenue, and the left side is 133 yards east of West Terrace. Frontage is 23 yards.

St. Patrick's Church, Grote Street, Adelaide. This building was replaced by a new, larger one in 1914 (see B 2457). The foundation stone was laid in 1844 (vide Reverend R.A. Morrison), and its tower was built in 1870 (see 'Register', 3rd January, 1871, p. 11). The western point of the Church is 36 yards east of West Terrace. The eastern point of the Church is 70 yards east of West Terrace. For a view of the building in course of demolition in 1959, see B 14233 and B 14234.

[General description] The newly completed Convent of Mercy Private School. It is a two storey building with one three storey section constructed of brick and featuring a motif on the wall with a geometric pattern including a cross. Three men (and a dog) pose outside the Old Colonist Hotel which is partially visible on the right. Mrs. H. McGuire is the licensee at the time. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 372 / Angas Street, north side, west corner of Chancery Lane / St. Cecilia's Hall and Private school / April 18th 1926 / Building erected in 1925. South Terrace, west corner of Hanson Street, Adelaide, on the 1st November, 1923. The Green Dragon Hotel was first opened in 1858 and was licensed at the time of this photo to W. Roberts. The near side of the premises for Richard Mitchell's furniture packers and carriers is 36 yards west of Hanson Street. See B 8595 for a balcony which was erected on the south and east sides in 1924. Note the tram lines on South Terrace.

[General description] The roofs of buildings of St. Dominic's Priory College can be seen above a tall picket fence, with hedging. Founded by a group of Dominican Sisters in 1883, St. Dominic's was one of the earliest Catholic schools to be established in Adelaide. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 846 and 847 / Molesworth Street, south side / October 4, 1927 / St. Dominic's Priory / Near side of building next to the Chapel is 109 yards. west of Hill Street.
