[General description] A row of terrace houses is partially obscured by Plane trees. A sign on the balcony of one of the houses announces "For sale by auction Wednesday 20th May", the agent being C.W. Bullock. On the right is the premises of the Cameron Shoe Company which appear to be in the early process of demolition which was completed in 1928. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 10 / North Terrace west / May 13, 1926. / Frontage of houses next to Cameron Shoe Company: 23 yards. Far side of the houses is 98 yards west of Victoria Street. These houses were demolished in 1926. For photos of building subsequently erected see B 4786.'

[General description] The main building of this institution has been given an updated look including a new roof with gable and enclosed verandah upstairs. The wing seen at the rear has pillared verandahs. A wrought iron arch over the front gate displays the name 'St Joseph's Providence' and street Number 32. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 121 / West Terrace / South corner of Philip Street / 12 May 1931 / Showing alterations effected in 1929-30 / See B 5154 / St. Joseph's Providence is a Roman Catholic institution for the accommodation of the aged and the infirm and for homeless girls / Frontage of building is 27.5 yards'.

[General description] A newly completed two storey brick building with a balcony is sandwiched between older cottages. A bicycle is parked at the kerb in the foreground. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 396 / Rutland Place, south side / 8 February, 1938 / The two storey building was erected in 1937 on the site of a cottage / The cottage was demolished before a photograph could be taken / The left side of balconied building is 19 yards west of Lowe Street / Frontage 10 1/2 yards'. In her book 'Bert Edwards: King of the West End' (Wakefield Press, 2019) author Pat Sumerling writes that the building was owned by city councillor and politician Bert Edwards and was used as a clubrooms. Set up as a dance hall it was intended for young people on Sunday nights. It also housed the West Adelaide Ramblers sporting club and was sometimes known as Edwards' Hall, (pages 191-192).

Drawings from the Frome expedition

Drawings from the Frome expedition

Album of sketches done by James Henderson. Most were done when Henderson was a member of Captain Frome's expedition to the north in 1843, and these sketches complement the diary of James Henderson 'Exploration of N. interior of S. Australia'; the remaining drawings are of scenes around Adelaide, Inman Valley and Rapid Bay. The drawings are generally of a larger landscape but most have a point of interest in the form of kangaroos, emus, people, etc. The expedition drawings are for the most part done in the album; a few smaller ones have been done on paper and inserted into the album later. All the watercolours were done on paper and then added to the album.

Photographs collected and taken for a conservation study of older residential buildings and hotels in Adelaide city (not North Adelaide) in 1976-1977, initiated by the Adelaide Residents' Society Inc., which were later used in their 1978 publication 'Preserving Historic Adelaide' edited by Colin Bond and Hamish Ramsay (Rigby Limited). The names of the photographers are not specified, but the following people were involved: Bob Ramsay, Michael Brock, Peter Kelly and Peter O'Grady. (Negatives of their photographs comprise series 4-6 of this group, and may include images from this series.) Some of the early views of buildings have been copied from State Library images (denoted in captions by 'SLSA'). See 'Contents' in 'More info' for details. (The City Acre number or exact location is not specified). Three images not listed in the 'Contents' but included in the book are: (98) Part of Queen Elizabeth I's proclamation of 1560 'agaynst breakyng or defacing of Monuments'; (99) Elevation drawing of St Paul's Cathedral, London by Christopher Wren; (100) Kirribilli House, Sydney.
