Pirie Street
Aurora Hotel on the north east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, October 22nd 1938, Pirie Street frontage is 21 yards and Hindmarsh Square frontage is 28 yards. The photograph was taken on 22nd October, 1938 when the proprietor was Thelma Barnes and Jessie. The three storey building had various balconies and a balustraded parapet overlooking Hindmarsh Square.

The cantilevered balcony and arched windows on the ground and upper storeys create a charming streetscape.Next door stands the Pirie Street Methodist Church which opened in 1851 and demolished in 1972

[General description] The Wesleyan Church is seen from Pirie Street in three quarter view. It was built in 1850 from stone with cement rendered facade and dressings, and a staircase on the side of the building. Note the large roof vents. Methodist Church, Pirie Street
Methodist Church, Pirie Street in 1933. The church is located behind the Adelaide Town Hall and was built in 1850 by Perryman and Son. It was opened in 1851 and later, in 1969, Pirie Street Methodist Church merged with Stow Congregational Church to became part of the newly formed Uniting Church.

Pirie Street, south side, January 12th 1959. Left side of the central three storey building (marked witrh a dot on the photograph) is 37.25 yards west of Gawler Place. Frontage of the building (from the dot to "x" on the photograph) is 40 yards. For a view of this building in 1910 see B 5381. The Salvation Army's People's Palace can be seen in the distance. Some of the businesses located in the buildings nearer to the camera include: Atkins Limited, The Town Hall branch of the E & S and A Bank Limited, William Brindal and Sons and Epworth Books in the Epworth Building at Number 33 Pirie Street. Epworth Building was built in 1927 as administrative offices for the Methodist Church and the Methodist Book Depot. This unique building was built in the federation gothic design with a seven storey "U" shaped structure and was named after the birthplace of John Weslei in Lincolnshire, England

The studio offers classes which include waltz, swing, cha cha, rumba, mambo, tango, twist and ballroom dancing

An MGA Roadster turning right into Freeman Lane from Pirie Street. Parked on the south side in front of Frank McCabe gem merchants and Super Elliot sportstore are L-R, an AP5 Chrysler Valiant (1964), a Holden FC Special Station Wagon (1958-59), a Ford Falcon Sedan (1960-65) and a Ford Customline (c1955). The Fred Astaire Dance Studio can be seen on the south western corner of Gawler Place and Pirie Street. The banners on the newspaper kiosk include the 'Truth' referring to the Beaumont Children and the 'Advertiser' referring to the upcoming visit to Australia of US President Lyndon Johnson. Pirie Street, south side, September 27th 1932. These buildings stood on the south side of Pirie Street near the south eastern corner of Hindmarsh Square. AK Gross quality butchers stands next to WG Thompson motor car repairers, car parking, JT Mitchell metal sheet welding and Axford and Forrest car engineers. Pike and Company adjoins the cottages on the eastern side. A man and a child can be seen standing beside the picket fence in front of the cottages. [On back of photograph] Acre 215 & 216. Pirie Street, south side. Probably about 1909. Frontage of cottages is 18 yards. Left side is 31 yards west of Devonshire Place. Post Office at Port Pirie became part of the street scene of this affluent town in the 1870's. Agriculture and shipping were major factors of Port Pirie's wealth. Two cars are parked outside the post office in this photograph taken in 1932.
