[General description] This is a row of old city cottages, built from stone with galvanised iron roofs, photographed from the opposite side of the street. Two of them display 'To let or for sale' signs from Matters and Company, real estate agents. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 157 and 156 / Pirie Street. North side / June 15, 1927 / On the left is Devonshire place. Frontage of one-storey cottages: 30.5 yards. Near side of two storey house is 49 yards west of East Terrace or 52.5 yards.' Pirie Street, north side, 21 April 1936, frontage of building is 19 yards. Site of HC Sleigh's is on the east corner of Ackland Street. HC (Harold Crofton) Sleigh 1867-1933 was responsible for importing kerbside petrol pumps to Australia. He registered the name Golden Fleece after he bought a cargo of oil from a consignee who was unable to pay. He contributed so much to the development of motoring in Australia and was disappointed that he could never drive a car himself due to a leg amputation. The Golden Fleece sign stands on the roof of the bluestone single storey business that has an arched roof over the central doorway. To see the building completed in 1936 see B 6941.

[General description] This low one storey building is the Phoenix Motor Company. According to the sign painted on the building they are Motor Engineers, Tyre Repairers and Body painters and dealers in Hupmobile cars. A smart car of the era is parked in front of the building. Pirie Street, Adelaide, looking east from King William Street. A leisurely scene from the era of horse transport, featuring a horse tram in the centre of the view. A mother and child in full Victorian dress, complete with sun umbrellas, are crossing the road, whilst businessmen stroll past. The gas lamp on the right, in front of Eagle Chambers, has a sign attached which directs horse riders and drivers to 'walk around corners'. According to a researcher, the horse tram in the image is pictured at the City terminus of the Parkside and Glen Osmond horse tram line.

Pirie Street Methodist Church, November 29 1893. Church is 72 yards east of King William Street, frontage 25 yards. This church designed by Henry Stockey was started in 1850 and finished in 1852. This church uses the traditional building materials of yellow limestone rubble walling and pink bricks for quoins and trim to the doors and window openings.

Gawler Place, west side near Pirie Street. The building was formerly used as a Congregational Chapel. The stone building faces east and stands back about 16 yards from the street alignment. The southern wall is about 5 yards north of the southern boundary of the acre. The photograph depicts the business premises of A Simpson and Son. A sack is being lowered from a barn next door and a horse and cart is being loaded with boxes. A bearded gentleman in a bowler hat is coming out the the warehouse.

The left side of the People's Palace (adjoining Army & Navy stores) is 13 yards east of Chesser Street. Eyes & Crowle's premises was demolished in 1923 and a new building erected. See B 1539.
