[General description] Looking east along Pirie Street from Hindmarsh Square. Business and light industrial premises are seen along the street. The Aurora Hotel (on the left) opened in 1859 as the Black Eagle, its name changed to the Aurora in 1894. Demolished in 1983 despite spirited campaigning to save it. The buildings on either side of the lane form a frame for the premises of James Hill and Sons, Merchants and Warehousemen, on the north side of the street. Its new verandah is supported with brackets from above with no posts on the pavement. On the left is Plymouth House, occupied by Bolton's. [General description] This two storey stone building with a balcony, situated on the corner of Pirie and Ackland Streets, probably comprised a shop on the ground floor with a dwelling above. The date 1870 appears on the parapet of this building. The premises of the Federal Lime Co. Ltd., Lime and Cement merchants, can be seen on the left. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 214 / Pirie Street, south side. East corner of Ackland Street. 1909-14* / Far side of William And Keene's premises is 66.5 yards east of Ackland Street.' [General description] The Pirie Street Wesleyan Church and Manse. The foundation stone of the church was laid on the 15th July, 1850, and the building was finished in the early 1850s. It was demolished in 1964 due to structural problems and declining congregations. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 204 / Pirie Street, south side / 1905 / Wesleyan Church and Manse. [General description] Maisonette style single storey cottage, divided into two dwellings with a corrugated iron roof and wooden picket fence. A sign is hung from the verandah: 'C.W. James Bootmaker Repairs Done'. The property is in a dilapidated state. Aurora Hotel, north east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide. The left side of the Dining hall is 28 yards north of Pirie Street. In May, 1912 when this photo was taken, the licensee was Henry Gepp. It was first known as the Black Eagle from the 29th June,1859, then had several name changes until 1894 when it was named the Aurora. It traded under that name until the 1st December,1983 when it was demolished.

Pirie Street, north side, March 24th 1937, right side of hotel is 36 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 16.5 yards. Major alterations were made in 1936. Compare photograph with B 6735. At the time of this photograph the Hotel Adelaide at 44 Pirie Street was managed by PW O'Neil. The hotel that previously stood on this site was known as the Selborne Hotel which was in operation from 1887 -1936. This photograph was taken on the opening day 24 March 1936 and it was finally closed 25 April 1970.

Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side, on May 13th, 1925. Two cottages, one with a Washington Palm in its garden, are next door to the National Hotel. This hotel has existed since 1850, and has been known as the Tivoli since 1972. The publican at the time of the photo is J.W. Pratten. On the right is a billboard with advertisements for Foy and Gibson's Summer Fair, Lactogen and Laxettes. The near side of the cottages is 18 yards east of Moger Lane and the near side of the National Hotel is 52 yards east of Moger Lane. The verandah of the middle cottage was removed in 1926.

Pirie St. frontage of one storey shops: 33 1/2 yards.' Two of the ladies are tending to a child in a perambulator. On the right is Eagle Chambers. The building with the balcony, Queen's Chambers, is 70 yards east of King William Street.

South east corner of Pirie Street, Adelaide, and Ackland Street. The corner building, occupied by J.N. Perry, Draper and Grocer, was erected in 1870 (see the 'Register', January 3rd, 1871). The storekeeper stands in front of his shop, whilst local mothers and children pose for the photographer. The cottage next door, on the left, was unchanged in March, 1925, except for roof and verandah breastwork. The further two cottages were also unchanged as at March, 1925. The far side of these cottages is 19 yards east of Ackland Street. This view is part of a group which form a continuation: B2509, B2511, B2510 and B 2512 (in that order). [General description] This photograph illustrates the passing of the horse drawn era: a livery stable is converted to a motor business. The Republic Motor Truck Company was a famous manufacturer of commercial trucks circa 1913 - 1929, in Alma, Michigan. Their trucks were used extensively by the Americans in World War One. [On back of photograph] Acre 160 / Pirie Street. North side / Feb. 28, 1926 / Right side of Republic Motor Truck Sales Co.'s premises is 18 yards west of Ackland Street. Frontage: 21.5 yards. [General description] The plumbing and gas fitting firm of A. Fischer & Sons' is one of the tenants of this corner building at number 130. A horse and cart which bears the name of the firm stands in front of their premises. Edwin H. Smith, Tailor occupies the rest of the ground floor. E.W. Attridge, also a plumber, gasfitter and sheetmetal worker is next door. Note the ornate gas lamp on the corner. Wesleyan Church and manse, south side of Pirie Street, Adelaide. Built in 1850 it was the Methodist 'cathedral' with seating for over 1000. In 1969 it amalgamated with the Stow Congregational Church and was demolished in 1972. Construction work on the right is probably part of the Town Hall. The far side of the church is 75 yards east of King William Street and the near side of the manse is 81 yards west of Gawler Place.

G & R Wills and Company, Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side. The right side of Wills premises is 13 yards east of Chesser Street and its frontage is 17 yards. This building was originally a Boot Factory but this operation collapsed in 1888. For alterations made in 1937, see B 7398.

Pirie Street, south side, right side of building in the centre is 36 yards east of Pulteney Street. This free standing Victorian building has an ornate parapet, and iron lace on its verandah. A large advertisement for Lipton's Tea appears on its side. The building on the right is the premises for Bromley Engineering Works.
