Ellen Street, Port Pirie, looking south and showing the railway station which was opened, as the town's second station, in 1902. The narrow gauge tracks in front of the station were laid in 1875 as part of the Port Pirie to Gladstone railway.


Central Hotel, Port Pirie
Central Hotel, Port Pirie on the corner of Florence Street and Jubilee Place was built in 1883 and has been partly demolished but still balances the streetscape of the Jubilee Hotel to the east. The proprietor of the two storey stone hotel at the time of this photograph was CW Trapmann

[General description] This group of men standing in front of the Chamber of Manufactures building are members of the 1925/6 Council of Management of the Chamber of Manufactures. See B 3455 for a closer view and the names of the Councillors. The building, which also houses the The S.A. Soldiers' Fund, is soon to be demolished. Pirie Street, Adelaide
[General description] This six storey building was constructed as an investment for the Methodist Church and to house administrative offices for the Church and the Methodist Book Depot (later renamed the Epworth Book Depot). The style is Gothic with a strong ecclesiastical feel. King William Street, Adelaide, east side. The right side of the Clarence Hotel is 46 yards north of Pirie Street and its frontage is 15 yards. The Tivoli Theatre is advertised with decorative lights. Several men are posing in front of the building. The man in the light-coloured suit and hat, is the American Charles J Johnson, known as "The Black Diamond, champion Cakewalk Dancer". He is standing to one side of a poster advertising his appearance. A woman and two children are on the left. Signs for Walkerville Ales are on the hotel windows. For a view of the hotel taken in 1925, see B 2450. The Clarence Hotel started out as the Alma Shades in 1857, then in 1858, was known as the Adelaide Shades. It was re-named as the Clarence Hotel from 1863-1917 and then became the Majestic. It traded under that name until 1981 when it was demolished.


Development of Adelaide 1839-1914: series of lantern slides.
Series of 102 black and white lantern slides numbered 40-145, illustrating the development of Adelaide, 1839-1914. Some slides are of maps, lithographs and sketches made by nineteenth century artists and lithographers. The series juxtaposes views of Adelaide buildings and streets and key landmarks at several time periods, to show the changes and developments in Adelaide to 1914. The streets in focus in this series include King William Street, North Terrace, Stephen's Place, Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Pulteney Street, Grenfell Street, Pirie Street, Gouger Street, Gawler Place and Hindmarsh Square. The following slides are not held: 1-39, 63, 67, 81, 128.

A collection of 14 postcards showing various scenes in Port Pirie, South Australia, including scenes of the B.H.P. (Broken Hill Proprietary Company) mining works and smelters. Many of the cards have messages written on the back and were received by Miss McKechnie of Medindie.

[General description] Cornell Limited Motor Cycle Shop on the corner of Pirie Street and Hyde Street. The two storey shop is situated at number 128 Pirie Street and it sells Harley Davidson motor cycles and Bates and Goodyear tyres. [On back of photograph] Acre 164. Pirie Street, north side. Corner of Hyde Street. January 15th 1926. Extreme left is 23 and a half yards west of Hyde Street. Far side of galvanized iron part of building on Hyde Street frontage is 18 and a half yards north of Pirie Street. [General description] Building on the corner of Pirie Street and Gawler Place. Many business' can be seen stretching along Gawler Place including a hairdressing saloon, National Cash Register, W.C. Rigby Manuafacturing Stationer, F. Bourne and Son, Harrison San Miguel, Haste and Company, H. Oliver at number 100, H.W. Short Printer and James Hill and Sons Merchants. Along Pirie Street can be seen Austral Cycle Agency, Wenzel Mattress and Upholsterer at number 68. At number 70 Myers sells linoleum and measures for suits. At number 72 Roberts and Company are the importers of boxed teas and Hoadleys sell confectionery. Coromandel Place adjoins this building in Pirie Street. Pirie Street
Pirie Street looking west from a point a little east of Gawler Place. There is no traffic on the wide street. The clock tower of the Town Hall can be seen around the corner in King William Street. A tavern is on the southern side of Pirie Street in the foreground. Women and a small child are standing on the northern side of Pirie Street opposite the Tavern.

Over the intersection with King William Street stands the Advertiser Building. On the northern side of Pirie Street stands Arthur L Atterton, W Colyer tailor, Selborne. Pirie Street is busy with pedestrians and cars.

Pirie Street, south side, January 21st 1935. Gerrard wire tying machines sales and repairs business stands on the corner of Pirie Street and Wyatt Street. This building was demolished in 1935. Compare with B 6791. At Number 105 Pirie Street stands Gentrys Used Car business. A gentleman in a hat and suit and stick is walking in the heat along the footpath.

South east corner of Pirie Street and Pulteney Street, October 16th 1937. The Pirie Street frontage of the two storey building on the corner (Phoenix Oil Co.) is 16.5 yards. The right side of O'Leary's refrigeration engineers premises is 23 yards south of Pirie Street. For the new building erected on corner in 1938 see B 8187.

A woman wearing an apron appears to be sweeping the footpath. [General description] Business premises on Pulteney Street showing The Pulteney Service Co Ltd. which supplies Austin Cars and Vulcan lorries. A 'Busibus' is advertised in the shop window. Next door was the premises of George Bolton's Ariel Sales and Service which has moved. Note the tramlines in the street. [General description] Premises on the northern side of Pirie Street between Chesser Street and Wyatt Street. Shops visible include a boot repairers, ABC Printing Works, Slatters, Macrows and a bank. A horse drawn carriage from the Clean Towel Supply is standing at the kerb near parked cars. Slatters and Macrows are located in the three storey building. [On back of photograph] Acre 166. Pirie Street, north side, January 19th 1926, The topmost storey of Slatters' premises was erected in 1923. For view of building prior to its erection see B 1220. Near side of Slatters' premises is 21.5 yards east of Chesser Street. The Bank is on the west corner of Chesser Street.

Pirie Street, north side, looking east. On the corner of Manufacturers Place are two lamp posts stating "Entrance to Dress circle and Front Stalls at Rickards Tivoli Theatre". Ward and Company Stock and Sharebreakers stand on the corner of Manufacturers Place. Next door the building houses FW Bullock and Company and Murray Hayward and Magery Solicitors. Afternoon teas are offered in Exchange Place. Pirie Chambers are further along the north side of Pirie Street.
