Bottom dump hopper barge
Photograph of the launching of a bottom dump hopper barge, that would have been used to carry mud and other spoil from dredging operations. The curved beam in the middle is a strong back that supported the chains that opened the doors in the bottom to let the mud out when at the dumping grounds. The South Australian Harbours Board had a number of these barges, which were used around various Ports and Harbours when they needed deepening. This barge was not used on the Murray River, and was not part of the Murray System. [Previously thought to be The "Crowie", built in 1911, the largest barge ever on the River Murray; since corrected by a researcher].

The curved beam in the middle is a strong back that supported the chains that opened the doors in the bottom to let the mud out when at the dumping grounds. The South Australian Harbours Board (SAHB)had a number of these barges, which were used around various Ports and Harbours when they needed deepening. This barge was not used on the Murray River, and was not part of the Murray System. [Previously thought to be The "Crowie", built in 1911, the largest barge ever on the River Murray; since corrected by a researcher]. This barge is the second of two barges commissioned by the SAHB from local shipbuilding firm Simes & Martin, who won the contract. This steel hopper barge (designated Barge No. 9 by the SAHB) was launched on 15 September 1913. The black square drawn on the image corresponds with the edge of the photograph used in a description of the launch in the Mail newspaper (20 Sep 1913, p9). When Simes & Martin won the contract, they leased a yard at Birkenhead operated by shipbuilders Smith and Williams. This photograph was taken immediately prior to the launch. Another image (B 787) is the same vessel immediately after the launch. The previous vessel (Barge No. 8) was launched on 10 March 1913 [information provided by a researcher].

A number of photographs relate to the BHP towns, Iron Knob and Broken Hill. Two of the Parker daughters, thought to be Wilga and Grace, accompanied their Mother on a voyage from Sydney to the Celebes and Java in 1926, including sightseeing at Macassar in the Celebes, the Mount Bromo Volcano, Sand Sea, Borobodur, and other places in Java with the homeward voyage via Singapore, Port Darwin, Thursday Island and Cairns.
