River steamer, Goolwa

River steamer "Tyro" on the slips at Goolwa. The boiler of this steamer blew up 20 Nov 1897, badly scalding Captain Randell and engineer Trounson. She was rebuilt at Mannum. She weighed 72 tons and shuttled between Murray Bridge and Mannum from 1884 to at least 1917. She was destroyed by fire at Murray Bridge in 1926.

Public School at Morgan

Morgan Public School and group of scholars ; Mr W. Edwards: Headmaster. Miss Fawcett: Junior teacher. Morgan was proclaimed a town in 1878. A large wharf was built and Morgan became one of the busiest ports on the Murray. It handled all the goods that were being exported and imported (especially wool) to and from the region upstream along the Murray and Darling Rivers. This photograph has very faint names of students written around the edge of the photograph.

"Ulonga" at Port Adelaide

Arrival of River Murray paddle steamer "Ulonga" at Port Adelaide, the last vessel to negotiate the Murray mouth and believed to be the first paddle steamer to call at Port Adelaide since 1905. It was brought to Adelaide by Capt. B. J. Tainsh in February 1948 (after sheltering in Kangaroo Island for a couple of days due to having open hatches). The boiler was wood fired and of necessity used sea water as feed. Later, when the boiler was opened, huge salt crystals covered the heating surfaces. She sank off Carrickalinga Beach carrying a cargo of gypsum in 1976

Jetty, old Government warehouse, and breakwater at Port Elliot. . Port Elliot's Horseshoe Bay was proclaimed a port in 1851. The port was established to provide a safe seaport for the Murray River traders. The mouth of the Murray was treacherous for navigating. Goods and passengers were carried between Goolwa and Port Elliot on the first public railway in Australia which was completed in 1854.

Military Barracks, Moorundie

Military Barracks at Moorundie; described on the back as 'Soldiers Barracks. Moorundie on the River Murray, S.A.'. According to a researcher, this is not the Military Barracks but rather the Police Station, as the station was built in 1841, the first of a chain of stations at the Murray River crossings to prevent a repitition of the battles fought between the Overlanders droving stock from New South Wales to South Australia and the local tribes. First commander of the post was explorer John Eyre who maintained good relations with the Aborigines. He was replaced in 1844 by William Nation who reported: 'Within the last six months, many overland parties have arrived, and all bear testimony to the good conduct and usefulness of the natives generally'.

Captain Francis Cadell

Captain Francis Cadell was born in Scotland and later established steam navigation of the River Murray. He negotiated with the South Australian Government to provide a bonus for the first two iron steamers to travel up the Murray to the Darling Junction. Later he navigated his way down the river onboard the "Lady Augusta", landing at Port Elliot.

Captain Francis Cadell claimed the government bonus for opening up the Murray River. His steamer the "Lady Augusta", commanded by Captain Davidson successfully passed through the breakers at the mouth of the Murray. With Cadell in command his vessel reached a point 2,400 kilometres up the river. Later in his career Cadell became involved in whaling, trading, pearling and slave trading

Capt. James Ritchie

Capt. James Ritchie: a pioneer navigator of the River Murray and father of Sir George Ritchie (see "Advertiser", August 8th 1944. ). James Ritchie founded a family of riverboat skippers. James had two brothers John and George. He joined Captain Francis Cadell's River Murray Navigation Company. James worked the river trade from Goolwa until he moved to Echuca to reside and trade on the river. He died in 1881 in Echuca. He had seven children, four of which became river boat captains

Group portrait of Captains George Grundy, Edward Creamer, and F. H. C. Kruse, Masters of River Murray paddle steamers. Edward Creamer or Creemer, later standardised as Cremer, first came to Australia as a sailor on a ship carrying convicts to Tasmania in the 1820s. He worked on a number of whaling ships before joining a land-based crew at Encounter Bay by 1848. He lived at Goolwa, where he married Mary Driscoll in 1850 and had a large family. He was appointed as the first signalman at the Murray Mouth in 1857, but soon returned to working as a pilot, fisherman and captain of the schooner Water Lily, carrying cargo from ports around the lakes to Goolwa. Captain Edward Cremer was appointed the first signalman when the railway was established between Adelaide and Goolwa. He was found dead in his boat after suffering a heart attack while carrying a load of salt. He was 75 years old when he died in 1892 and had been a colonist for 50 years. Captain FHC Kruse was born 25th May, 1823 in Germany and went to sea at 14 years of age. He arrived in Adelaide in 1854, settled in Milang and purchased boats to begin trading on the lakes and Cooroong. Although retired at 80 he remained active in the Milang Regattas.

W.S. Murray's Railway Hotel on North Terrace, Adelaide, situated just east of Trinity Church. This hotel ceased trading in 1873, W.S. Murray being its last licensee.

McHenry Street, north side, March 24th 1937, right side of Goode Durrant & Murray's premises is 23 yards west of Gawler Place and frontage is 17 yards. Goode Durrant and Murray's building was erected in 1936. Compare with B 6831. The three storey building has bars on the windows on the ground and first floors. Cars and motor bikes are parked in the street.

[General description] The building on the left has arched, leadlight windows and a cement wreath surrounding an oval shaped window on its gable above the door. It has ivy growing on its walls. New additions on the right are the Mayo Refectory (centre) and the George Murray building (far right).
