The caption on the back of the photo has been partially lost but reads 'Dobo-Aroe Islands. _3/12/42 for the first time __rmation of 3 Lockheed Hudsons. K.M. Kemp. Danks-Brown. Oldham. __ps were destroyed ... fires started ... plane in background ... burned. Dobo was occupied by Japanese forces in mid 1942 and quickly became the base for reconnaissance flights by 'Jake' floatplanes, several of which attacked Allied shipping in the Arafura Sea. The RAAF subsequently targeted Dobo to destroy the base, and this appears to have been one of the earliest attacks. The Japanese Navy squadron (934th Kokotai) were withdrawn on 2 February 1943 [information supplied by a researcher].
