Avenue Road
[General description] These two large stone houses, designed by architect Daniel Garlick and built in 1873 appear to be identical. They are two storey with basements. The wall and cast iron fences were constructed at the time. The Congregational church tower can be seen in the distance. Pennington Terrace, North Adelaide

John Street, North Adelaide
[General description] Shops on John Street, North Adelaide. On the left is Yendall's shop. Large signs in front of the shop advertise 'Ham and beef, Cake and Fruit, Woodroofe's Original Kola Beer'. A news bulletin propped against the shopfront reads 'Southern Cross to the rescue'. (This refers to an incident where Charles Kingsford-Smith took the Southern Cross up to Timor to pick up a consignment of mail stranded there by a damaged Imperial Airways aircraft that was carrying it to Australia.) A sign advertises Seppelts Famous Port next to the small building in the middle, the premises of a bootmaker named JH Beyer. King William Road, North Adelaide
King William Road, east side, April 7th 1937, frontage is 31 yards. Additions made to Cathedral Hotel in 1936. A large two storey building was built adjoining the south wall of the hotel. Compare with B 6825. Site of Hotel: south eastern corner of King William Road and Kermode Streets. At the time of the photograph the proprietors of the hotel were Mr Alfred Henry Wade and Mrs Mary Agnes Ashton.


North Adelaide
North Adelaide, looking north east from Saint Peter's Cathedral. In the foreground is Kermode Street, showing a large pair of Victorian houses, next door to workmen's cottages. On the other side of the park the mansions of Brougham Place can be seen. On the right, opposite side of King William Road, is the Women's and Children's Hospital. Above it is the Congregational Church. In the centre a horse tram is making its way up the hill.


Kermode Street
Kermode Street, north side, October 2nd 1936, right side of house is 19 yards west of King William Road and frontage is 15.5 yards. For the building erected on this site in 1939 see B 9537. The residence in the photograph belonged to Dr Charles Davies and was erected in 1841. The roof and verandah were added later. Dr Charles Davies emigrated to South Australia in 1848. He built up a large medical practice. Later he became a member of the first fully elected Legislative Council in 1857. He served for 8 years and was also appointed to various Boards. After retirement he bought Mattawarangala sheep station but later moved to Beaumont.


Kermode Street
Kermode Street, north side, December 12th 1958, frontage of building is 23 1/3 yards. Left side of building abuts Bagot Street, east side. The building was completed in July 1958. It has large letters "B I" at the front. See B 14365 and B 14366 for views taken in 1960


North Adelaide
[General description] Kermode Street cuts diagonally across this view of north western North Adelaide. Large houses of the well-to-do can be seen across Palmer Gardens, in Palmer Place, contrasting with the more modest dwellings in the foreground. Brougham Place, North Adelaide
[General description] The facade of this two storey house is cement rendered with a parapet to disguise its pointed roofline. It has has shuttered windows and a large portico over its entrance which also serves as a balcony. its sloped front garden is terraced. [On back of photograph] 'Brougham Place, south side / April 11th 1939 / This residence (a conversion of an existing building) was completed in 1938 / Compare with B 2980 / The left side of residence is 14 yards west of Bowen Street / Frontage is 12 yards / Residence stands back about 80 feet from Brougham Place'.


Brougham Place
Brougham Place, 17th January 1963, gardens of the residence shown in B 8215. An outside spiral wrought iron staircase can be seen attached to the residence. The garden features mature trees, topiary shrubs in pots and large flagstones around the lawn.


North Adelaide
[General description] This photograph shows the intersection of King William Road and Brougham Place, including Brougham Gardens, North Adelaide. It features a panoramic view of buildings, parklands and distant suburbs. In the centre of the view an electric tram is making its way along King William Road. At the intersection large hoarding displays advertisements which include Terai and Amgoorie Teas, Hale Grocers and Hoopers Furniture. [General description] This two storey stone building with gables is the Angas Building, paid for entirely by John Howard Angas, a continuing benefactor of the Children's hospital. It was opened in 1894 on the King William Road frontage of the Hospital complex. A large covered wagon drawn by two horses stands in front of the building. [General description] King WIlliam Road runs through Brougham Gardens and down past the Women's and Children's Hospital and St. Peter's Cathedral. Parklands and the city buildings form a backdrop. A horse tram passes a large billboard displaying advertisements for products including Terai and Amgoorie Teas and Burford's Soap. The right hand side of this photograph matches up with the left side of B 3461 to form a panorama. Palmer Place, North Adelaide
[General description] The stone walls of this two storey house appear to have been rendered and a double storey verandah with large pillars has been added. A bicycle is propped at the kerb in the foreground. Strangways Terrace
Strangways Terrace. Left side of house is 75 yards east of the western boundary of acre 756. Frontage: 17 yards. This two storey bluestone house has a bow window to one side of the frontdoor. The house is named Parramatta Villa and has an established front garden filled with shrubs and bushes. It was built in 1871, designed in the Victorian Period by architects Rowland Rees. GH Catchlove also employed these architects to build another large house next door at number 55 Strangways Terrace. All the embellishments were made of wood. The carved wooden capitals in the form of bunches of grapes to the verandah and balcony posts are unique. The original owner, George Henry Catchlove arrived in Adelaide on board the "Hooghly" in 1839 with his widowed father. Together with other syndicate members GH Catchlove owned property in what is now Eden Hills.
