Lithograph made by Penman and Co., of the 'Adelaide of Congregational Chapel and School, Kensington, near Adelaide, South Australia'. According to a researcher, this image would appear to be a lithograph from the sketch by S.T. Gill noted in the South Australian Register, 22nd September 1849, as 'about to be lithographed' as a fund-raiser for the chapel. The lithographed image can be dated 1849. Artwork inscribed on verso; 'at one time known as Cheethams', 'The Clayton Church was divided off from here', 'The church in the foreground was situated on the corner of Maesbury Street and High Street Kensington, next to an old cemetery which was still in existence in 1926, though the building at the rear had disappeared'.

Heads of the People (first set)

The first set in the 'Heads of the People' series of five sheets, featuring (clockwise from top left hand corner): 1) George Selth Coppin (1819-1906), identified as 'Acting Purveyor General', was a notable actor and owner of the Auction Mart Tavern and Exchange Hotel; 2) Emanuel Solomon (1800-1873), identified as 'ex Dorset', was an ex-convict, merchant, auctioneer and owner of the Queen's Theatre and the neighbouring Temple Tavern in Gilles Arcade. He had recently sold the brig 'Dorset', an important ship in Adelaide's life in the 1840's; 3) Boulter Gabriel Raye, identified as 'Gentleman in the bush', was a pastoralist from Wellington; 4) Samuel Stocks Junior, 1813-1850, (identified as 'Stocks at par'), was a merchant, original shareholder and later resident manager at the Burra Mine. This sheet was first published in May 1849.

[General description] Some guests at the fete are admiring the view from the flat roof of Graham's Castle, others are grouped on the lawn near marquees erected for the occasion. Reference in the newspaper: 'Mercury and South Australian sporting chronicle', 5 Jan 1850 p. 319 [p. 3] "We have just received a lithographic sketch of the festivities at this hospitable mansion... which provides a spirited idea of the gaeity of the scene. The perspective is exceedingly good..." Refers to the house as 'Prospect House'. [On back of photograph] 'Fete held in the grounds of Graham's Castle in December 1849 in connexion with the consecration of Christ Church, North Adelaide.
