[General description] Lithograph of an S.T. Gill sketch, from'Views in Adelaide No. 2'. Shows Hindley Street looking east, with city buildings on either side of the unsealed road. The two storey Phoenix hotel on the right (on the east corner of Clarendon Street) was established in 1850 and the licensee from 1850-52 was R. Hall. The Royal Oak and Miner's Arms Hotel can be seen on the left of the picture, with a partial view of the Clarendon Hotel further east. Old Victoria Theatre, Gilles Arcade, Adelaide. It was built in 1842 and opened under the name 'The Queens' Theatre'. In 1843 the building became South Australia's first Law Courts, then it was refurbished and became the Royal Victoria Theatre' and operated under this name from 1850-1868. After many years of non-theatrical use it was converted back into a theatre again in 1996. Shannon's premises (the old theatre) face north. The door on the right leading to Shannon's office is 95 yards east of Light Square. Shannon's frontage is 78 yards south of Currie Street.

[General description] Two men with top hats and tails are posing in front of this two-storey building which has Ionic pillars and a coat of arms on the pediment. There are two large gas lamps either side of the entrance. It was built as Queen's Theatre in 1840 and was also used for public occasions and by the Supreme Court from 1842-46. In 1846 it was rebuilt by G.S. Coppin, known as "the father of Australian Theatre" who renamed it the Royal Victoria. A billboard in front of the Theatre mentions a Mr. Hoskins who was probably William Hoskins, a well-known actor-manager at the time. Southern end of Gilles Arcade off Currie Street. View looking south was taken October, 1959. Frontage of McPherson's building between the crosses is 11 yards. This is the facade of the old Royal Victoria Theatre. This theatre began as the Queen's Theatre and is the oldest intact theatre in mainland Australia. However the first theatre in Adelaide was the Royal Victoria Theatre on North Terrace. This name was used by the old Queen's Theatre (in the now called Playhouse Lane) from 1850 but the opening of the Theatre Royal in Hindley Street saw the demise of the Royal Victoria Theatre. Between 1933 and 1973 the building changed hands and housed McPherson's Store and Warehouse, Dalgety's Factory and Store and McPherson's Showroom

Southcott Pty Limited was founded in Adelaide in 1886 as a general engineering business by two brothers, James and Albert Southcott.
