Lewis William Gilles

Lewis William Gilles

Lewis William Gilles, in his later years and possibly taken in Victoria. He arrived in Tasmania at the age of 27 in 1823, where he was the manager of Archer, Gilles and Company Bank established in Launceston in 1840. It was absorbed and merged to become ANZ Bank Ltd. Mr LW Gilles began life as a naval officer, and moved to Tasmania to establish the Tamar Bank. He came to Adelaide in 1844. He and his family moved to assist his older brother Osmond Gilles, who was a Colonial Treasurer, with managing the lead and silver mine at Glen Osmond Mine. He held positions in the Victorian public service stationed briefly in Hepburn (Srings?) and zpproximately 14 years as a magistrate in Warrnambool. He retired from there at the age of 69 in 1866. Osmond Gilles died that year, and he resided at the family property 'Woodley' in Glen Osmond until he died in 1884.

Samuel Thomas Gill

Samuel Thomas Gill renown artist and photographer recording Australian scenes and events. In 1849 he famously produced lithographic sketches of twelve South Australian colonists called "Heads of People". Sadly he died penniless in Melbourne in 1880. The photograph shows a rubbing of the carving saying " Samuel Thomas Gill 1818-1880 Delineator of scenes and events in South Australia 1839-1851. Member of Horrocks Exploring Expedition 1846".

[General description] The new facade of the Arab Steed Hotel is Art Deco in style, featuring a ceramic tiled 'public house' dado, a corner balcony and shuttered windows. The five, two-storey terraces attached to the hotel were built in 1877 by William Holmesby and, although having a different owner, were designed to complement the hotel. Maynard John Lucas is the licensee at the time this photograph was taken. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 654 / south west corner of Gilles and Hutt Streets / 3 April 1939 / Arab Steed Hotel / Hotel modernised in 1938 / Compare with B 3771 / Hutt Street frontage: 15 1/2 yards / Gilles Street frontage: 13 1/2 yards / Far side of the two storey building is 39 yards west of Hutt Street' (Another hand) 'For views of this hotel taken in 1961, see B 14471 and B 14472'.

[General description] This plain two storey stone building is the Arab Steed Hotel, in the time of licensee M.J. Lucas. It is one of Adelaide's oldest hotels, the first license being issued on the 20th September, 1849. Attached to the right of the hotel are five two-storey terraces which were built in 1877 by William Holmesby and, although having a different owner, were designed to complement the hotel. On the left is a sign which reads: 'Bunyip Naptha Soap. Even a man can do it'. A pair of horses hitched to a covered wagon stand at the kerb. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 654 / South west corner of Gilles & Hutt Streets / Oct. 4, 1926 / For alterations made in 1938 see B 8169. / Hutt Street frontage of hotel: 15 1/2 yards. Gilles Street frontage: 13 1/2 yards. Far side of two storey cottages is 39 yards west of Hutt Street.'
