Four scenes from the Burra Burra Copper Mine engraved for a newspaper page for the "Illustrated London News", 2 December 1848, page 339. The views have been later hand-coloured. The scenes are (1) Kooringa - The Burra Burra township; (2) Opening of Lode in Stock's air-hole, in the mine; (3) Interior of the mine; and (4) Burra Burra Mines - the surface operations. Newspaper text is inserted between the scenes, including "We are indebted for the drawings of our illustrations to Mr. J.B. Graham, who has recently returned from Australia, where, after a few years' labour, he has realised a handsome fortune from his shares in the Burra Burra Mine."

East corner of Gilles Street and Harriet Street, January 21st 1929, Harriet Street frontage is 29 yards and Gilles Street frontage is 29 yards. This building was erected in 1928 on a site formerly occupied by a galvanised iron shed. For view of Gilles Street frontage see B 5139. The photograph shows the Adelaide Box Manufacturing Company Limited building. This building has an appealing round wall enclosing the front door and three windows.

Gilles Street, south side, March 1938. The left side of the lane shown on the right of photograph, is 26 yards west of George Street. The far side of the last cottage on left with palm tree is 32 yards east of George Street. The large building adjoining the latter cottages is Gilles Street Public School. Note on back of photograph says "row of houses suggested for demolition to make way for a playground for children attending the Gilles Street School".

Gilles Street, south west corner of Hanson Street, July 1922. The extreme left is 64 yards south of Gilles Street. Far side of the cottage on the north side of the shed bearing the words "Thats right" on the roof is 47 yards south of Gilles Street. On the corner is John Victor William Sommer - Licensed Second Hand Dealer. Signs along the frontage include: Bon Ton Company Grocery Store, Wickerworks Manufacturing, Shell Motor Oil, Dancing Cots Motorside. A delivery van is parked outside the grocery store, its number plate reads 187. A wicker pram stands in the shop doorway. A sign bearing the Shell Motor Oil logo is displayed on the front of the shop, so it may have been a motor business before. See B 1796 for near identical image, without the motor vehicle at left. [General description] Large house on the corner of East Terrace and Gilles Street. Possibly the home of T.N. Hardy Vinegrower. The rambling two storey house has arches covering a verandah on the ground floor and balconies on the first floor facing the parklands. Creeping vines cover much of the house. [On back of photograph] Acre 661. South corner of East Terrace and Gilles Street. About 1896. Telegraph pole on the extreme right is 47-1/2 yards west of East Terrace. Far side of gable on left is 31 yards south of Gilles Street.

One of three albums containing portraits of members of the Board of Governors and Officers of the Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery of South Australia. A first group of portraits was assembled in 1884-1886, and included 'gentlemen who have been Governors of the South Australian Institute from its establishment in 1856, and of the Public Library since 1884'. These were added to subsequently, with three volumes compiled to 1940. The caption for each photograph has the date of appointment or date of election to the Board of Governors. The contributors to the albums were asked upon submitting their photograph, to indicate the date of the photograph if possible. These dates of photographs have been shown in brackets.

Owienagin Gap

Owienagin Gap

Grave of Walter Gill, a Scotsman formerly of Galashiels, a pioneer squatter who leased Warraweena Station from Sir Thomas Elder. [He died at Owienagin Gap on 7 November 1858 while travelling to Port Augusta. His grave was fenced in with pine saplings by his companions and a rock from the creek bed was placed as a headstone. (See Austin, p.42, "Mines of South Australia".) Since this picture was taken, the fence has been removed and a conventional gravestone marks the spot. Information provided by Peter Gill.]

All manner of street life is depicted, from a bullocky and his team, to the carriages of the gentry. This artwork is number 8 of a series of lithographs by S. T.
