[General description] Set between the foreground of the wide dirt road and the sky are the imposing stone buildings of Christian Brothers College. The Foundation Stone was laid by the Catholic Bishop (later Archbishop) C.A. Reynolds, fourth bishop of Adelaide, on 15 August 1878. Classes began on 20 January 1879. The classroom block on the left was demolished in 1961 to make way for the widening of Ackland (now Frome) Street. In this photo the school is surrounded by a corregated iron fence. [General description] Baptist Chapel, founded by William Finlayson in 1855. It is a simple stone building in the neo-classical style. [General description] St. Stephen's Church was built in 1900 in the Gothic Revival style, the hall being added later in 1905. Both stone church buildings share a tall picket fence. [General description] The Orient Hotel has just been given a complete change of style. Its stone walls have been rendered and it now features a parapet with Art Deco details. The trams go past, note the wires overhead. There has been a hotel on this site since1854 but it has been known as the Orient since 1863 (except briefly called Coveney's Hotel in 1897). These alterations were made when Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander was the licensee. Behind it a signal box can be seen. The buildings on this corner are soon to undergo major changes, the most prominent to be the new Bank of Adelaide building.
