Summary

[General description] This Church was built by New Connexion Church minister James Maughan in 1863. In 1888 the New Connexion Church merged with the Bible Christians, and in 1900 the church building became the Central Methodist Mission. Even though this original church has been replaced (in 1965) the name Maughan Church continues to survive. It is seen from the opposite side of Franklin street with the unsealed road in the foreground. Horse tram tracks are visible in the centre of the road. On either side of the church are business premises. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 265 & 266 / Franklin St., south side / Bible Christian Church / 1896 / Far side of Clarke Bros.' premises is 42 1/2 yards east of Pitt Street'.
