Photographs taken by Captain Samuel Sweet across many locations in South Australia and the Northern Territory. Many are marked 'Sweet Adelaide' with a number, and sometimes an anchor is drawn. Some have also been stamped, 'Captn Sweet Adelaide, landscape photographer' in the lower right corner. A number of photographs in the collection have not yet been confirmed as being taken by Captain Sweet. To see details of the individual photographs, search on Archival number PRG 742/5/1-202.

[General description] Torrens Lake cuts across the centre of this view. In the foreground is part of the railway yards where a row of railway waggons stand in front of a long low iron building with a curved roof. Cottages stand on the banks of Torrens Lake looking out over the water across to the parklands and distant North Adelaide. In the centre right the Adelaide Oval grandstand can be seen and on the far left is the Victoria Bridge. [On back of photograph] 'Torrens Lake and North Adelaide / Probably in the eighteen eighties'. Glenside

[General description] Parkside Lunatic Asylum (later known as Glenside Hospital). It was designed by R.G. Thomas in 1868 during his stint as Government Architect and built from Glen Osmond stone. The central portion of the building has a tower and a widow's walk and there is an imposing portico over the entrance. The clock was installed in 1876.

The "Gulnare" at Southport

[On front of photograph] '"Gulnare" at Southport, Port Darwin / From Captain Sweet's negative.' Another hand '1871-72.' [General description] The "Gulnare", Captain Sweet's two masted schooner, is seen at anchor, her masts reflected in the water. She was the supply vessel for Goyder's Northern Territory survey expedition. On the right tents can be seen and men are posing for the photographer, in boats and on the jetty. On her return journey the ship grounded on a reef and was condemned.

Images 81-82 of Ceylon, nos. 83-95 of Malta, 96-101 of Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel, Windsor, 102-103 of Oxford, and 104-107 of English coastal town/s. Items 108-111 (loose in back of album) are prints from clasical scenes. Attribution for the photographs are as follows: images 1-50, 73 are by Sweet; images 77-79, and possibly 80 are by Charles Bayliss. Overseas scenes (images 81-111) have not been copied.

Auldana Winery

Auldana Winery

Stone wine cellars and other buildings at Auldana where men pose with bullock wagons filled with barrels. There is a garden in front of the buildings and wooded hills in the background. Wine and spirit merchant Patrick Auld planted his land with mostly Shiraz vines in 1845 and by 1862 it was amongst the largest vineyards in South Australia. In 1888 Auldana was taken over by Sir Josiah Symon who employed Edmund Mazure under whose management the estate thrived.

Institution, Brighton

Institution, Brighton

[General description] This two storey stone Victorian Gothic building features a central gable, topped with a cupola. There is decorative brickwork around its doors and windows, and a small balcony over its front door. A large ground floor verandah has carved wooden detail including an archway. Funds were raised for this building by William Townsend, M.P., the founder of South Australian Institution for the Blind, Deaf and Dumb. Building commenced in 1876 and was completed in 1878 at the cost of £4,289. [On back of photograph] 'Blind, Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Brighton / 1878-86'.

[General description] Canowie Station homestead with a rocky creek in the foreground. Situated in the mid-north of South Australia (between Hallett and Jamestown) Canowie Station was a pastoral lease of originally around 60,000 acres. It ran high quality sheep and Shorthorn cattle.

Ledgard's Bridge over the River Torrens, near Cudlee Creek store and Post Office - two horsemen George Hannaford (on the left) and G. Kennings. The bridge broke down in 1914 and was rebuilt. (See B 613).

Bridge, Currency Creek

Currency Creek railway bridge. Sweet Adelaide 405. This bridge was built by Sara and Sons and opened in 1869. The iron girders were made in the Goolwa Foundry. The Freestone used in the construction of the bridge came from a nearby quarry and the Bluestone came from the Port Elliot quarry near Nangawooka. There were matching stone piers at the top of each abutment and at the end of each wing wall but these had disappeared by the 1940s

[General description] The Government Survey Camp, Palmerston is an orderly collection of tents and iron huts in a cleared area in the sparse bush. The sea is visible in the distance. (From Captain Sweet's negative).

[General description] View of the partially completed viaduct over steep gullies. Its work team (whose tents are pitched in the gully below) can just be made out in the centre of the viaduct, posing for the photographer. The hills are sparsely vegetated. Home for Incurables in the Adelaide suburb of Fullarton. Purchased in 1879 for 1,700 Pound the large building has wrought iron trimmed verandahs. It was surrounded by 9 acres of Eucalyptus trees and parklands. The home was renamed The Julia Farr Centre in 1981. [On back of photograph] "Home for Incurables, Adelaide (Fullarton) 1872-86".

[General description] The extended Pile family including explorer John McKinlay pose on the garden path in front of Oaklands, the family's gentleman's residence. This photograph must have been taken 1872 or before as John McKinlay died in 1872. [On back of photograph] ''Oaklands' / Residence of James Pile, Gawler East / 1872-85 / Photograph by S. W. Old gum tree, Glenelg. The sign on the bent old tree says "On this spot on the 28th December 1836 The Colony of South Australia proclaimed a British Dependency". The tree on a small block is enclosed on all sides by a wooden fence. A thatched building is standing on the next door plot. Fields and a few buildings can be seen in the background.
