Samuel White Sweet

Samuel White Sweet

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Samuel White Sweet. He wears a double breasted jacket and a colourful cravat and sports mutton chop whiskers. He was a sea captain who retired from the sea in 1875 and opened up a photographic studio in Adelaide. He travelled through South Australia in his horse-drawn darkroom photographing landscapes, outback stations and homesteads. A large collection of his work is held in the South Australian Archives.

Adelaide Town Hall organ, King William Street. (Sweet Adelaide 853) The organ arrived from London in 1877. The opening concert was held in 1877 with David Lee, Melbourne City Organist at the keyboards.

Union Bank of Australia, south western corner of Gawler Place, then Freeman Street, and Pirie Street. (Sweet Adelaide 32) The Union Bank was first established in Hobart in 1837. It was an Anglo-Australian bank. The photograph shows the Adelaide branch which was housed in an attractive two storey building with shutters over the windows and an iron railing fence in the front.

Flinders Street Baptist Church and Manse on the west corner of Flinders and Divett Streets. (Sweet Adelaide 501) The church was completed in 1863 and the Manse in 1877. The church was designed by architect RG Thomas and is typical Gothic revival style with elaborate captials to the columns.

(Sweet Adelaide 71) The octagonal tower of the Unitarian Church can be seen on the northen side of Wakefield Street around the corner from the Torrens Building. The Torrens Building was designed by Melbourne architect Michael Egan. The gardens in Victoria Square are contained behind iron railings.

Behind the houses and gardens of Stanley Street is the open expanse of parkland. The city can be seen further in the distance. In the centre right a building is under construction. [On back of photograph] '1875-79. Looking south from the north side of Stanley Street. The extreme left is 41 1/2 yards east of New Street. Critical factors in determination of date are the white clock face of the G.P.O. and the presence of the old bridge on the Frome Road. This is the central portion of a panorama of three views of which B 1005 is the right portion and B 9202, the left.' (Sweet Adelaide 378).

Government House, North Terrace. (Sweet Adelaide 33) Approximate date of the photograph is 1880. In 1872 the Conservatory (Library) was built next to the Ballroom. The Billiard Room, Private Secretary's Office, Porter's Hall and Strong Room were all added. The photograph shows the new western wing of Government House.

The South Australian Advertiser, 2 November 1883: page 4 notes that Captain Sweet took a photograph of the interior of the Town Hall during a luncheon for the laying of the foundation stone for the Adelaide Young Men's Christian Association, with Hon. Alexander Hay, President of the Association in the chair. His wife, Agnes Grant Hay nee Gosse, is seated two seats to Alexander's right and Charles Goode is seated four seats to his left.
