[General description] The extended Pile family including explorer John McKinlay pose on the garden path in front of Oaklands, the family's gentleman's residence. This photograph must have been taken 1872 or before as John McKinlay died in 1872. [On back of photograph] ''Oaklands' / Residence of James Pile, Gawler East / 1872-85 / Photograph by S. W. Sweet' (Another hand) 'Note by Mr. Robert Gordon of Gawler: From back of path John McKinlay (Explorer), his wife Jane (nee Pile), gardener, Mr James Pile, Mrs Pile, ?, Miss Jessie Pile / 9-4-1969'. James Pile's wife was Isabella Pile, nee McCauslin.
