Historical information

Canowie Station homestead was designed in 1875 by one of Adelaide's best-known architects, Edmund William Wright (1824-88), who had been engaged by the Canowie proprietors Sanders, James, & Co. Having drawn up his plans, Wright placed a newspaper advertisement calling for tenders for 'the erection of a house for the head station, Canowie Run, 40 miles north of Kooringa (Register, 19 Oct 1875, p.2). The construction would have been completed late 1876 and was then occupied by Canowie manager Thomas Goode and family. Vegetation growth indicates that Sweet made this photograph ca.1880.
