[General description] North Terrace cuts diagonally across this panoramic view of Adelaide looking north west. In the distance is the River Torrens, parklands and suburbs. Adelaide railway station is near the top left with Government House and grounds further east. Public buildings line the right-hand side of North Terrace (from left to right); the State Library of South Australia, South Australian Museum, Exhibition Hall (with dome) and Brookman building. Daisy Bates at a railway station

Daisy Bates standing on the platform of a railway station in 1934. The caption provided had the railway station as Ooldea, on the occasion of the visit of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester. According to a researcher, however, 'Ooldea station building was the standard Commonwealth Railways' one-roomed building without a raised platform. This scene is possibly a railway station in South Australia, but not Ooldea.' The 'Advertiser', 11 October 1934, however, reports that 'There was a longer halt at Ooldea, where the Duke spent half an hour riding, and met Mrs Daisy Bates O.B.E. whose work among the natives has made her famous.'

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

[On back of photograph] 'Charles Buxton Anderson / Railways Commissioner' [Newspaper article attached to back of photograph] 'Mr. Charles Buxton Anderson, M. Inst. C.E., M.I.E., Australia (SA) / Railways Commissioner, is a son of the late Mr. John Anderson of Adelaide. He was born on August 19, 1879, at North Adelaide and was educated at the Glenelg College School and the School of Mines. In November of 1898 he joined the Engineeering Department of the South Australian Public Service, and was successively draughsman, surveyor, resident engineer for Railways, superintendent of Railways, acting chief engineer, and general superintendent of railways. He was appointed railways Commissioner in 1930 in succession to Mr. W.A. Webb and his management of this big public undertaking has been conspicuously successful'.

Album of people, places and events on Eyre Peninsula and the west coast of South Australia during the years 1929-1934

A collection of 329 photographs of people, events and places on the Eyre Peninsula and west coast of South Australia. Places include Cleve, Ceduna, Cowell, Franklin Harbor, Port Lincoln, Boston Bay. The album contains photographs which document the Back to Port Lincoln Carnival celebrations, 7-14 February 1930; photographs taken at Ceduna of the Western Australian Centenary Air Race 1929 (also known as the East- West Air Race); the refuelling stop at Ceduna of the inaugural flight of Air Mail services between Adelaide and Perth 1929 and the 130th Anniversary of the Landing of Matthew Flinders at Boston Bay, 26 February 1932. A number of sailing ships and motor vessels visiting Boston Bay between 1929 and 1934 were photographed, among them Melbourne, Olive Bank, Hougomont, Viking, Phasianella, Minnipa, King Stephen, Moonta, Rhymney, L'Avenir, Grootekerk and the new aircraft carrier HMAS Albatross which was first commissioned in 1929. The photographs include some interesting images of farming and transportation on the far west coast of South Australia, and show glimpses of the lives of Aboriginal people at that time at Poonindie Mission, Koonibba Mission, Fowler's Bay and Ceduna region. The photographs in this collection were taken by E. F. Derbyshire during the years 1929-1933, when he was a commercial traveller for Clarkson Limited of Adelaide, suppliers of builders' tools and hardware. Blacksmith shop, Australian National Workshop, Islington Depot, Blacksmiths had been working at the site since the 1880's. According to a researcher, who once worked at the blacksmith shop, the man in the image is one of only two left-handed workers. One was Eddie J. Rust and the other G. Aistrophe. It is likely the man working the chain is Eddie J. Rust (known as Eddie Oxide). His position would have begun as a blacksmith and he would then have been upgraded to a chainsmith. Eddie Rust would have replaced Lennie Gerlach, who had taken over from Untermayer Gunther (Ugf) Schell.

Attribution for the photographs are as follows: images 1-50, 73 are by Sweet; images 77-79, and possibly 80 are by Charles Bayliss. Overseas scenes (images 81-111) have not been copied.

Blacksmith shop, Australian National Workshop, Islington Depot. According to a researcher, who once worked at the blacksmith, the crew forging under the hammer are, from left to right, Rex Burford (blacksmith), man in the centre is Allen Holberton, man on the left is unknown. The Hammer driver would have been either G.W.(Bill) Hobby or Reg Debais. The men are pictured forging an old axle, which they are reworking into rectagular shapes. These shapes would then be forged into dog spike removers. The steam hammer would once have been a Davis and Primrose 50 tonne, built in Leith, Scotland circa 1890.

A selection of World War One photographs taken by (and of) Hermann Fritz Hubbe and others including Eric Talbot Smith. Hermann Fritz Hubbe, John Hood and E. Talbot Smith were all killed during the war. There are photographs taken at sea outside Alexandria, at Lemnos Harbour and at camp, presumably in Egypt. Also includes photographs of King George V, Prime Minister Hughes and others taken on board "HMAS Australia" and photographs of Hermann's gravesite.

South Australian Harbors Board 15 Ton steam railway crane being converted in 1941, as a war time measure, to a 50 Ton traversing crane at Outer Harbour. According to a researcher, Chambers Scott was a Motherwell engineering firm which built a few steam cranes but this might have been their largest. They failed after a fire in 1926. Two 5' 3" gauge 6w+6w 10T steam railway cranes built by Chambers, Scott were constructed to Job No. 1139/1925 for the South Australian Harbors Board. Local newspaper articles dated Aug 1925 mentions their arrival ( 10t at 15' ) In World War II one was at Adelaide's Outer Harbour, where it had been converted to a 50T (60T in emergencies) traversing crane in 1941, to compensate for the transfer away of the floating crane. It was out of use and partially dismantled in 1968. The other was at Port Pirie in the 1960s; scrapped ca. 1967.

Henry Coathupe Mais

Henry Coathupe Mais: Engineer in Chief S.A, Civil Engineer and Railways and Tramways Engineer. After a career of railway engineering in England, Sydney and Melbourne he won the position of Engineer and Architect to the South Australian Government. He lived in Rundle Street, Kent Town and was famous for his musical evenings and lavish suppers. He was instrumental in building a connection from the Barrier Ranges to the Transcontinental Railway in South Australia. He is wearing an embroidered levee dress uniform with bicorn hat and ceremonial sword to which he was entitled as a high level civil servant, following the British court tradition. He left Adelaide for Melbourne where he died at South Yarra in 1916.
