Aerial views of the Main Arena at the Wayville Showgrounds, showing a crowd assembling for a Pontifical High Mass held in conjunction with the all-Australian Roman Catholic Education Congress. Apostolic Delegate the Most Rev. Dr John Panico presided over the mass, which was attended by approximately 20,000 people in November 1936.

In the foreground Aboriginal people are depicted fishing in the River Torrens (Kaurna name: Karrawirra Parri). The image illustrates the Torrens River and the cattle yards at the north western end of the city opposite the Newmarket Hotel. The Mount Lofty Ranges can be seen in the background.

Photographs selected to be incorporated into a book about Coober Pedy. Initial discussions took place between John Dallwitz and Rigby Ltd. in 1977 but it is unclear as to whether the book was published. Photographs were to be used in various chapters .... which was to be titled 'Photographic essay of present day Coober Pedy'. Also an index to the photographs. Not all the photographs have been digitised. Also includes colour slides with the name 'Busbridge' on them.

The Semaphore Hotel is on the extreme left of the photograph and Jetty Hotel stands in the centre of the photograph. The wooden slatted building on the extreme lower left of the photograph houses the South Australian Railways Office so two of the four men in the foreground are possibly waiting for transport to Adelaide.

[General description] Strangways Springs Telegraph Station. It was one of a number of repeater stations (at approximately 300 kilometre intervals) along the telegraph line between Adelaide and Darwin and was an important stopping place for travellers. It was abandoned in 1896 when William Creek on the new Central Australian Railway took over its services.

William George Goodman

William George Goodman

Sir William George Toop Goodman (1872 - 1961) Engineeer, later General Mananger of Municipal Tramways Trust. He sat on the Metropolitan Omnibus Board. In 1931 he chaired the Royal Commission on the South Australian Railways. He was knighted in 1932 for services to Adelaide.

No. 718. First large power on Port line at Commercial Road Station, on Port Adelaide viaduct, on 27th February 1965. The occasion was an Australian Railway Historical Society special train to Outer Harbor. It was the first use of 'large power' on the line. No. 718 was built at the SAR's Islington Works in 1929.
