Built 1884 (12) W Hamilton and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: Dundee Shipowners Co. Ltd. (WC Taylor and Co. managers) registered Dundee. c.1908 sold Norway and renamed 'Deka' c.1914 renamed 'Ba' under Norwegian flag, and later under the flag of Uruguay (various sources say this vessel became renamed as 'Justicia' under Bolivian flag but I am unable to confirm - RHP)]. According to a Dutch researcher, "The photo is taken in the harbour of Delftshaven, part of Rotterdam. The Glenafton lies alongside the Voorhaven quay. The windmill in the background is the 'Waakzaamheid'." Another researcher says that, "the ship lay moored to the Achterhaven".

The 'Glenlora' docked in Port Chalmers
The iron barque 'Glenlora', 774 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, re-rigged as 3 mast barque, c.1880 764 gross and net tons. ON50084. 192.2 x 31.2 x 18.4. Built 1864 (7) T Vernon and Son, Liverpool. Owners: T Stenhouse, reigstered London. c.1872/3 Shaw Savill and Co: who later became Shaw Savill and Albion Ltd. registered Southampton. c.1898 to Swedish owners without change of name. In 1918 was listed as being Norwegian owned. Well known New Zealand emmigrant trades]. A researcher has provided the following information: the Glenora is docked in Port Chalmers in Dunedin, New Zealand, approximately 1880. Behind the ship, visible through the rigging, is the spire of the Knox Cathedral.


The 'Glengarry' in Hobart

The 'Glenfarg' as Norwegian vessel 'Thekla'

The 'Corona' at Port Chalmers, New Zealand

The 'Earl Dalhousie' moored at Gravesend, U.K.
The wooden ship 'Earl Dalhousie', 1047 tons, moored at Gravesend, U.K. [wooden barque. 1047 tons. ON29463. 191.5 x 34.8 x 22.0. Built 1862 (9) A Stephen and Sons. Dundee. Owners A Stephen and Sons, registered Dundee. c.1882 sold to Bremen and renamed Meta Seeger. Noted as being stranded in 1887]. According to a researcher the captain of this ship was Richard H Cary - who came from the fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall England. He was one of five brothers - all were ships captains who spent time in Australian waters. Richard was the only one of the brothers who did not die at sea.

Owners James Boyd, registered Glasgow. Sunk after a collision in the Channel 7 August 1899 when loaded with paving stones on a voyage from Nantes to Cardiff].

The four masted steel barque 'Madagascar', 2145 tons, and the London tug 'Simla' moored in an unidentified port [steel 4 mast barque, 2145 tons, ON95057, 282.0 x 40.5 x 24.6. Built 1888 (5) Russell and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: J Boyd, registered Glasgow, later Alliance Shipping Co. Ltd. (J Boyd and Son, managers) and became the Russian owned 'Katanga'].


The 'Mozambique' in an unidentified port
The four masted steel barque 'Mozambique', 2433 tons, in an unidentified port [steel 4 mast barque, 2433 tons, ON99813. 283.3 x 43.0 x 24.2. Built 1892 (8) Russell and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: J Boyd, registered Glasgow. Later Alliance Shipping Co. (J Boyd and Sons, managers) 1912 sold Germany and renamed 'Ulrich', As such captured by Royal Navy in 1914 and sold, eventually, to Norwegian owners who renamed vessel 'Sydnaes'. She was abandoned in a sinking condition March 5, 1920 on a passage from Norfolk, Virginia to Montevideo].

This image was taken in Mission Bay, San Francisco. Probably by Wilton as the backdrop is exactly the same as many of his images taken at this location. The Nile was sold to a Norwegian company and re-named "Thor II" and was eventually sunk by U45 in 1917.
