Summary

The four masted iron ship 'West Lothian', 1882 tons, under sail [iron 4 mast ship, later barque. 1882 tons. ON86721. Built 1882 (11) C Connell and Co., Glasgow. 279.5 x 40.2 x 23.6. Owners: J Boyd, registered Glasgow, later Alliance Shipping Co. Ltd. (J Boyd and Son, managers) registered Glasgow. Later passed to Norwegian owners. Captured by a German submarine in the North Sea, April 18, 1917 and sunk by gunfire].

One of the ships owned by J. Boyd and Sons, Glasgow.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
