Summary

This image was taken in Mission Bay, San Francisco. Probably by Wilton as the backdrop is exactly the same as many of his images taken at this location. The Nile was sold to a Norwegian company and re-named "Thor II" and was eventually sunk by U45 in 1917.

The four masted iron barque 'Nile', 2163 tons, anchored in an unidentified port [iron 4 mast ship, later barque. 2163 tons, ON93288, 283.5 x 40.5 x 24.6. Built 1886 (6) Russell and Co., Port Glasgow. Owners: A Brown, registered Glasgow, later 1890s. Alliance Shipping Co. (J Boyd and Son managers)].

One of the ships owned by J. Boyd and Sons, Glasgow.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
