General notes

One of the ships owned by W.A. and C. Brown, Glasgow.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

1874 built as full rigged sailing ship Charlotte Croom by Charles Connell & Company, Glasgow for W.A. Brown & Co., Glasgow; 1886 sold to W. MacKinnon (A. Mavkay & Co.), Glasgow; 1890 sold to Astracana Sailing Ship Co., Ltd., (E. Roberts, later E.F & W. Roberts), renamed Astracana; 1906 purchased by A/S Nor (Chr. Christensen). Arrived in Sandefjord 17 July for refitting at Framnæs Mek. Renamed Nor. Sea trials were conducted 16 October before she, along with the catcher Svip, headed south. A/S Nor was established only one week earlier on 10 October. The trip from South Shetland to Sandefjord took 50-52 days; 1909 sold to AS Condor (Lars Christensen, manager); 1913 sold to AS Grib (Einar Noer, manager), Sandefjord. Used as 'skrott'-ship at South Shetland; 1916 disappeared en route from Bordeaux to New York. (History provided by a researcher).
