Friedrich Krichauff : SUMMARY RECORD

Papers of Friedrich Krichauff and family comprising certificates, including clients certificates of naturalisation, family and business correspondence, 5 letters from Ferdinand von Mueller, papers re: S.A. and N.T. land transactions, tax returns, papers re: estates of Earl, Leopoldt, Reitschler, Schoenberg and others, wills, legal memoranda, share scrip, ledgers, papers re: Spark Arrestor Co. and papers re: the Enemy Property Act. A donation in 2010 comprises a collection of letters sent to Friedrich Krichauff, mostly from his family in Germany, Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein 1843-1892. These have been arranged in order by Tom Darragh, and a listing made by him giving date, writer and place. Almost all the letters in the collection are written in old German script, except for some written to him by others in South Australia. They also include farm account books (small notebooks), household accounts and receipts, school reports and family tree documents of the von Bertouch and Krichauff families. There are also 17 letters in English from H.J. Cumming in 1865 relating to management of a mine at Cape Jervis (probably the silver-lead Talisker mine at Silverton). Also includes a program for Carl Linger sacred vocal music concert in 1855 in Adelaide (series 65). Two of the works were by Linger, who conducted the orchestra led by Mr Chapman. Sepia photograph of two galvanised iron residences, locality unknown.

Medals

Oxer (Family), 1915, Realia, PRG 1175/2

ANZAC commemorative medals issued to Harold Oxer and Arthur Lucas Oxer. These medals were awarded to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Gallipoli landings. Issued in 1967, medals were available only to survivors or their next of kin.

Florence and George Oswald

Private Edmund George Oswald in miltiary uniform with his wife Florence (Flo) Emma Oswald (nee Green). They were married in London at St Matthias Church on 23 January 1919. Florence is seated and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, fur scarf, a long double-breasted coat and holding a pair of gloves in her left hand. Underneath the photo is inscribed: 'Love from Flossie and George. 4/5/19. (1919)'. On the back of the photo is inscribed: 'Soon be home Mum, old dear. xxxxxx' in pencil. A newspaper obituary notice for George Oswald, 6 November 1938, is stuck on the back of the photograph.

Australian Military Forces certificates

Australian Military Forces certificates awarded to A.B. Durdin, comprising a sergeant's certificate qualifying Durdin for the rank of sergeant (19 August 1915), a school of musketry certificate awarded for passing a local citizen officers course (12 October 1915), a school of instruction for infantry certificate (20 October 1915), and a copy of a certificate of appointment as an officer in the Land Forces in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant (20 January 1916).

Concert programme

Programme of the Grand Concert, presented by officers on Sunday 25 January 1917. Lt. Durdin played the role of Abdulla (the remittance man) in the one act play 'The Remittance Man', performed in the second half of the concert.

Third Light Horse Regiment in camp

Men of the Third Light Horse Regiment at their camp, probably in Egypt. Four men standing at a bench at the front of the photograph appear to be preparing food. Tents, wagons and supplies can be seen in the background. The back of the photograph is inscribed with '3rd LH Pulchen'. The photograph may have been taken by Major Lance (Lancelot Ashley) Lewis.

Reinforcements for Field Artillery

October reinforcements for the Field Artillery. The men embarked on the S.S. 'Orontes' on 24 December 1916. Driver Geoffrey Howard Bishop is top row, fourth from the right. Driver Geoffrey Howard Bishop, no. 31521, enlisted on 18 September 1916, aged 28, and was assigned to the 7th Australian Field Artillery Brigade, 107th Howitzer Battery. He saw active service in Frace, and died of pneumonia on 21 November 1917.

A researcher has suggested that the officer on the far left is Lieutenant Arthur Francis Lindsary Harper, Adjutant of Mitcham Camp, standing next to Major Walter Leslie Stuart, the second Commandant of Mitcham Camp, and in the centre, South Australian Governor Sir Henry Galway in civilian clothing and holding a cane, rather than wearing his usual British military uniform.

Uncaptioned photo postcard of the interior of an army hospital, probably in Bristol, England. Six bedridden and convalescing soldiers are posed for a group shot, with one patient displaying an embroidered sampler.
