Service number 18488 George Bentley Pegler, a staff member of the South Australian Harbors Board. George enlisted in the AIF on 26 October 1917 and served in France with the Australian Army Medical Corps. He returned to Australia in 1919. From 1923 to his death in 1950 he held the position of Harbourmaster at Cowell.

She says she can imagine how distasteful the conditions must be in Military Camp, mentions sending a parcel to 'dear old Lance' (likely to have been Private Mervin Lance Mitchell, who served in the 9th Light Horse Regiment, 12th reinforcement) and wishes she was nearer to the camp so she could visit her son. Another researcher provided te following information: 'Crossed axe insignia on "J. Edwards" indicates someone from a Pioneer Battalion. Ammunition bandolier and leather leggings indicate a Light Horse or similar. If his name is J. Edwards it is possibly "John EDWARDS", 12287, enlisted in A.I.F. - Field Ambulance, transferred to A.F.C. as a Medical Orderly then to a Rigger (Air Mechanic). The researcher acknowledges that this is supposition until the insignia/uniforms for these roles can be confirmed.
